Along similar lines of the Apple patent, Bumptop has been making waves for a little while now. The virtual desktop, currently in beta, renders your desktop as a top down table with fully interactive 3D icons for files and programs that can be manipulated in a real time physics engine. The idea is the desktop is like a real desk where you can pile things up, arrange the icons where you want and if you can’t find something throw the icons off till you can. It’s a very interesting way of interaction with your desktop, I get the feeling however that just because you can pile things up and make a mess of your desk maybe you shouldn’t in the virtual world. I wouldn’t want my computer desktop to resemble the mess of my real desk.
For more information check out Bumptop. They have a beta sign up list if you’re interested in testing out the system.
