PQ Labs, the guys behind some decent implementations of touch in current operating systems, have recently been pushing their mutlitouch screen overlay with demos including multitouch Warcraft (see below), which is probably about the coolest thing I’ve seen in a while from PC gaming. Their iTable, a more portable multitouch screen than say something like Microsoft Surface, that can be moved around on a pedestal will also launch soon.
A recent video (see above) of PQ Labs demo for the iTable and G2 has caused a bit of controversy on the internets. It shows the instant recognition of an iPhone put on the screen and then the ability to media manage what is on the iPhone straight from the screen interface. It’s a very nice idea as a concept, some have been saying it’s a Windows 7 implementation however the start of the video clearly shows OS X. I think people are over thinking this, it’s a concept, they’ve been arguing about how the iPhone connects and why isn’t there a sync screen. This video shows you where we should be headed, a intuitive, simple to use but powerful interface using the tactility of touch would really enhance and simplify our day to day interactions with our computers. Media management is one of those functions that would benefit from the multitouch interaction paradigm greatly as people are already experiencing with current generation multitouch technology.
So what do you guys think, is this the way you want to interact with your media and in the future your computer. Do you want to put your grubby mits all over your screen and manipulate your data in this way? Something’s for sure, if this really does take off there’s going to be some serious cash up for grabs to the first people who can come up with a finger print and smudge repellent for the glass touch screens.
Check out the videos after the break and let us know what you think in comments.
