Final Fantasy XIII and Advent Children

Sat, Jan 31, 2009

Hello there fellow Pixel-Gamers.  Every week I am going to go over any big news involving the video game industry as well with giving heads up on future game endeavors, as well with some occasional video game reviews.

I can’t start this post without mentioning what I believe was the biggest news to me.  The latest official trailer for Final Fantasy XIII has been released and gives us the fans a good look into what we can expect to be in this chapter’s world, characters, and  as well with some gameplay.  Here’s the trailer: (be sure to check out the HD version)

Other big news that involve the world of Final Fantasy is the announcement of the Blu Ray version of the CG movie: Final Fantasy VII: Advent Children with 3 different ways to obtain them.  The regular edition with 30 mins of never before seen footage; first edition with Final Fantasy XIII demo, Final Fantasy Agito XIII trailer, and Final Fantasy Versus XIII trailer; and the PS3 bundle that includes the First Edition Blu Ray as well with a customized FF VII: Advent Children PS3.  All 3 editions will be made available to Japan on April 16.  No word yet on a U.S. release date.

CAN’T WAIT!!!

CBS.com sucks

cbssucks

Over here at pixelatedgeek we have an unofficial set of rules- our guidelines or eight fold path if you will, that have a fight club-like effect on the members of our dear little site- Rule 1. Get Money and Get Paid our second and our final rule- GET MONEY AND GET PAID. So you can imagine my dismay when I arrived at CBS.com to watch How I Met your Mother, expecting a Red Rider Bee bee gun only to find a child size bunny suit for Christmas. If twitter and Digg aren’t your normal sources of information, CBS.com does not host their shows on their website. CBS’s blatant disregard for rules 1 and effectively 2 leads to the conclusion that CBS.com is not a place for the internet community and ultimately to the idea that CBS.com sucks.

Mr. Burton himself (the real one)

Mr. Burton himself (the real one)

One of my favourite actors, media producers and geek, LeVar Burton, has just launched a new site containing his thoughts and ramblings. Something anyone with an interest in new media, community and good quality ideas should pay attention to. For those of you who don’t know who I’m talking about (shame on you!) LeVar first came to my attention as the infamous Geordi La Forge from Star Trek: The Next Generation and the various films that it sporned. LeVar has been involved in all sorts of great things since those days including narration of many a quality audiobook. So go ahead and check out LeVar’s new site and follow him on Twitter, I promise you won’t regret it.

Location Based Gaming – The next big thing

Sat, Jan 31, 2009

Location based gaming has been on the horizon ever since GPS devices hit the mainstream. Geocaching has been popular with hikers and mountaineers for a while now with locations built into handheld GPS devices used for rambling. These primitive versions of location based gaming are all very well and most people will probably never have experienced them. They’re not what I would call a game, more of an activity.

Mirrors Edge DLC Delayed Till February

Fri, Jan 30, 2009

Mirror’s Edge producer, Tom Farrer, greeted all his Mirror’s Edge fans with news that the DLC won’t be available until February.  Yes, February is just around the corner, but what are we going to do for this weekend? We, the Mirror’s Edge fans, had hopes and dreams of jumping, sliding, wall-running in our heads.  Oh, well.  There must be a good reason for it.

If you’re a PS3 owner, then you don’t have to fret.  There is 1 map you can download now:

iPhone Can’t Play 360 games

The phrase ‘no sh*t’ comes into my mind when I read that statement. So when I saw this announcement from 1337pwn in reference to the video above I wasn’t shocked or disappointed. Who in their right mind thought that the iPhone, brilliant as it is, had the horsepower to play something coded for a triple-core games console? I mean even if it had exactly the same amount of power it still wouldn’t be able to emulate the 360 platform!

Anyway for those who need a laugh check out the PSA from 1337pwn and the video from the scammer above.

Remote control bugs are go!

Beats that Microcopter anyday

Beats that Microcopter anyday

The University of California, Berkeley, using funding from everyone’s favourite crazy military research arm DARPA, has created the first radio controlled flying Rhinoceros Beetle. This first step to cyborg attack bugs was made possible using 6 electrodes connected to the brain and muscles allowing a radio controlled chip and battery to be used to control the beetle removing it’s free will. It’s hoped that further revisions will be able to remove the battery and be powered by the bug itself. The Rhinoceros Beetle has a maximum payload of 3g whilst the controller system only ways 1.3g. This leaves plenty of wiggle room to fit micro-nukes, survelliance equipment or people blasting lasers, whatever DARPA has cooked up. Of course this would be the ultimate in annoyance devices, flying bug that you could land in your collegues’ coffee? Sweet!

Ghetto SpaceShipOne Cockpit instruments

SpaceShipOne Cockpit

SpaceShipOne Cockpit

A recent post on Gizmodo showed the inside of the amazing SpaceShipOne. Inside it is a little different from the highly cluttered and extremely technical Space Shuttle cockpit with a single screen, joystick, GPS device and to my surprise a Fisher Scientific Timer (circled in red). Now for one this looks a little ghetto, you’d think you’d have something a little more advanced than your average crappy digital timer, but the thing that really got me is that I use that exact timer in the lab! I really hope it’s not doing something critical, don’t get me wrong it’s great for timing experiments and telling me when to go to lunch, but I wouldn’t trust my life to it!

Hit the read link for a photo of said timer sitting on my lab bench. (more…)
