*Note to all readers. This list is based on MY experience with the MULTIPLAYER format of FPS games and how I enjoy them, and how I think others would enjoy them as well. I do NOT take single player story into account (that’s for another list, another time). Also, I know there are a number of games I will not include, that many of you may deem list worthy as others have enjoyed them too and have been given high ratings. IE… Resistance. I have heard GREAT things about the game, but the only reason it won’t be on my list is because unfortunately, I have yet to experience it. So here’s my list of the top multiplayer FPS games based on “attractiveness”, multiplayer game play, replayability, and overall enjoyment.
10. Perfect Dark (N64)
![]()
- Move over Lara Croft. Joanna Dark is another gun wielding vixen that has gained the attention of many. But besides the storyline, the multiplayer mode is also one to be enjoyed. The style itself reminds us of another great game… but more on that later. This is the type of game you can play with your friends that you all can both enjoy and frustrate. Especially if you have a certain gun. It’s basically a race on who can get that guy first. And this is no ordinary gun my friends. It’s a fun that has the ability of x-ray vision AND the ability to shoot through walls! In the gaming world… that is what i would like to call, “HAXXOR!!!!”
9. Timesplitters (PS2)
![]()
- The Timesplitters series for the PS2 is one of those fun quirky fps games that you can just pick up, and play around with for a couple of hours. Whether it be the quirky single story mode, or the very fun multiplayer modes you can play with a friend (or friends if you had the controller port extensions), or with bots. This was one of those games that had an interesting and VAST collection of characters and weapons that were from the times of the past, present, and future. Be it your fighting with 6-shooters from the old west, or plasma rifles from the distant future, you have a ton of weapons at your disposal, and the more weapons, the more fun.
Go past the break for the rest of the list.
8. Unreal Tournament (PC, XBOX)
![]()
- What’s there to really say about the Unreal Tournament Series that one doesn’t know about it already? This game, is a definition of a MULTIPLAYER game. No single player mode, unless of course you cant play online or don’t have friends over to play with you, then you’re stuck playing against bots. Like Timesplitters, there’s a lot of character choices with their own unique skills and weapons to help you kill your prey. Needless to say, the Unreal series is a great multiplayer game, and a great game for tournament play.
7. Counter Strike (PC)
![]()
- BOOM! Headshot! Before there was Halo and Gears of War, there was the awesomeness that is Counter Strike. Playing CS for the first time in a LAN Center in the Philippines is what got me hooked to PC gaming. Like Unreal Tournament, this game has NO single player mode. In fact, it was never really an official game. It was just a MOD based off of Half Life using the Valve engine, and this game quickly became a big hit in the gaming community. It took the simple approach of Terrorists vs. Counter Terrorist and made it into an enjoyable gameplay experience. Dualies, deagles, and the ever powerful and spammable AWP are my favorite. I enjoy the sniping battles. Big complaint about it though, the weapon accuracy is VERY weird. Who knew headshotting a guy from across the field with a Dessert Eagle was pretty easy to do.
6. Halo series (Xbox, 360)
![]()
- FINALLY! A GREAT FPS console game. Is it a stretch to say that Halo for the Xbox revolutionized FPS console gaming?? It actually made playing FPS with a controller enjoyable. Even though online play for the first one wasn’t available (unless you know what to do), have a bunch of your friends over and the fun will last for hours. From the many modes, weapons, and vehicles you can use and play with, the experience and fun of just playing with your friends is enjoyable. And this game helped make that happen.
5. Gears of War (360)
![]()
- I know I know… a lot of you are thinking… “Why the eff is Gears so low on your list?! Effin n00b! It’s the best game EVAAAR!” Though Gears of War is a GREAT game, I digress. There are just… OTHER games I would rather be playing. But still… the Xbox does it again. From a great story to great multiplayer action, Gears definitely took console FPS to another level. And are you KIDDING ME?!?! CHAINSAW GUNS???!!! How awesome is THAT in itself?! But still… as a multiplayer standpoint… I guess it’s just not for me. Especially with the first one. It seemed that the only strategy was shotgun dodging. Though fun… again… it wasn’t for me. I don’t see myself playing this game online for hours and hours of a time.
4. Call of Duty 4: Modern Warfare (PC)
![]()
- FINALLY, a war game that doesn’t take place in WWII era. And thankfully, this is a GREAT game, both single player and multiplayer wise. Not only is this a great game to play online, the gameplay offers a sense of an RPG type feeling with weapon upgrades, and skill assets. From busting out your pistol even if your taken down for a chance to take someone else down with you in your final seconds, to faster running, and to pulling out your grenade at the last second as you fall to your death to hopefully take someone down that is in your area. What else is there to say about this game? Just too awesome.
3. Left 4 Dead (PC)
![]()
- Ever want to experience a zombie horde in FPS fashion? Well this is the game for you!! And it is an AWESOME one in fact. It’s just you and 3 other members blasting and melee-ing your way to the next safe house you have to get to. Sure… it may be repetitive… but it is a DAMN fun repetitive game that I’d be happy to play and replay for hours. Plus, no matter how many times you play the same level, you will never expect what would be coming. When you expect to prepare for a horde to come from one area because that’s where they were last time, the AI director flips the switch and has them coming from someplace else! That’s AWESOME! AAAAAAND, playing online with strangers makes every gameplay so much more different. Teamwork is the key to survive. And don’t feel like being one of the survivors, in vs. mode you can take your turn of being one of the elite zombies and going for the survivors. This game is near perfect, and I CANT wait for the DLC to come.
2. Team Fortress 2 (PC)
![]()
- Team Fortress 2… is the BEST multiplayer FPS game to come out in our time. You can put it on the board. This game is the reason I never really had the time to branch out to other games and play through them. The replayability of this game is GINORMOUS. It is just a downright fun game to play and is the definition of a multiplayer FPS game. From the graphics, to the many maps and game modes, to the player classes and weapon upgrades and achievements, this game top to bottom is perfect. Really… there isn’t more to say about this game other than… WHY THE HELL ARE YOU NOT PLAYING IT RIGHT NOW?!?! Don’t have it? Well… GO OUT AND BUY IT! And get it for PC… the 360 version is just laughable… (IMHO).
1. GoldenEye 007 (N64)
![]()
- Who doesn’t remember gathering around a TV with all your friends, N64 controller in hands, probably blood shot eyes, from playing round after round of GoldenEye 007 for the Nintendo 64? This game introduced experiencing playing an FPS game with your friends. Who knew that a game based off of a James Bond movie would be one of the biggest hits in our lifetime? This game definitely showed us what playing an FPS with your friends is all about. It took playing video games with your friends to a whole new level. You’d start out by fighting over who got to play the short Asian guy because that guy was the funnest to play with, then choosing the weapons allowed, then choosing the stage, to finally having the chance to hunt and kill your friends’ character down and racking up the most kills. And let’s not forget that beautiful golden gun. Being the wielder of such a weapon meant doom for everyone else. Let’s just face it… though old… it will be tough to beat out this game. If I have a bunch of friends over… and I’d have to choose between playing Team Fortress, Halo, or GoldenEye… you bet your ass I’ll be picking to play GoldenEye.

Lol, CS as number 1… But why?? Outdated graphics and same old trivial game modes… More likely to put Duke Nukem 3D at 1st place…
lolololololololololol
Gears of War in FPS ? noobtard….
I just want to say, while the post lists me as the author, it’s wrong. Mainly because I wasn’t even a writer for the site at the time.
Also, why the article is “Charles’ Top 10 Multiplayer FPS games”
I deleted the original author and threw his posts under your name.
Ah! I was wondering why I was getting comment notifications for articles I didn’t write.
