In a recent post from tgdaily, Google is now urging IE6 users to upgrade to a better, faster browser, Chrome or FireFox. When an IE6 user logs into Gmail, they will see a link at the top reading “Get Faster Gmail.” Upon clicking the link, the user will read a page promoting a faster experience with either of the two browsers with its download link. Why can’t the Microsoft Internet Explorer team just pull the plug on IE6? It’s so outdated! You are delaying progress of the intarwebs! The Mozilla team is pulling the plug on FireFox 2 soon, so why can’t you? We all know for a fact that most IE6 users are usually those that are not computer savvy. They usually just use the “world wide AOL” for electronic mail and using “the Google.”
It is those same people, including the Microsoft Internet Explorer team, who are not pulling the plug on IE6. Which consequently slows down the progress of the Internet. It’s like figuring out that the traffic on the road you are on is caused by one car at the front of the pack, and that pack leader happens to be a senior citizen. You want to be respectful, but at the same time you just want to pull your hair out. Why can’t they just merge onto the slow lane and allow some innocent bystanders to pass them up. I have had my experience when tackling code just to make things work for IE6, and I think I speak for all web designers and developers when I say that it just sucks the life out of you. We spend hours upon hours making cross-browser compatible pages that will work on IE7+, FF2+, Opera, Safari, Chrome and other better browsers. But, when it comes time to test on IE6, many things just don’t workout the way they are supposed to. Coding new AJAX, CSS, and other nifty scripts for IE6 is like trying to teach your Grandpa how to play a new video game. You know he’s not gonna get it, so you just put the game on a very low level, or find a way around the fact that he doesn’t understand.
I hate you IE6 and so do many others. You’re over 7 years old now! You know how many internet years that is converted into? Over 9000! So please do us a favor and just retire already. You’ll make many peoples lives easier and happier. I promise.
