Video game addiction isn’t a new topic to gamers and parents, but it is a topic that comes up very often in the gaming community. I myself, have been hooked on World of Warcraft for 3 years straight. From open beta to Serpent Shrine Caverns, I played World of Warcraft day in and day out. I was using video games as a way to not think about my real life issues I was dealing with at that time. That is, until I finally had to make a life decision. It was between RL + GF or WoW. (Real Life & My Girlfriend or World of Warcraft.). Of course, I choose my real life and girlfriend and from then on I was convinced that video game addiction was a real thing
Just like a drug, video games are a form of entertainment to help people get away from their real world issues. Now, I’m not saying it’s an extreme type of drug like cocaine. It’s a small drug that throws your feelings away and puts you in an imaginary world for a long time. I’m not bashing on all video games and saying that people should not play at all. What I am trying to point out is that, just like with everything in this world (like food, shopping, and even sex) it should be conducted in a moderate manner.
To parents, if you’re using video games as a “babysitter in a box” you are not helping your kids at all. Get them outside, sign them up for a sport. Let kids play video games, but for only a short period of time. Also, when they play video games, play with them, interact with them. Use video games as a way to connect more with your kids, not to simply just get away from them.
Unless, you are playing video games for long periods of time as a career for something like MLG (Major League Gaming), video game design, or something in the video game industry, then of course it’s ok. As long as you are making a living off of it. If it is for mainly entertainment reasons, then by all means, play, but just don’t let it take over your life.

No, that’s just idiotic. Video Game Addiction is a excuse to escape personal responsibility. Yes, video games can serve a escape from reality, but you’re forgetting that players have to be actively attracted to playing games to invest the time and energy and at the end of the day, a video game is just a game. Many people immerse themselves in games because they attracted to the social atmosphere to find those who share personal interest without fear of ridicule or to escape personal problems, the same way many people immerse themselves in books or movies.
