Maria Holic Image 1Kanako holds an idealized vision of her future at Ame no Kisaki Girls School.  Her mother and father met there (her mother as a student and father as a teacher) and eventually fell in love.  She wants to have the same experience in this “magical” place; however, she reveals that she isn’t looking for a man… she wants a woman.  As you will find out, she breaks into hives when touched by a man.

She has yet to learn that her fate is going to take a turn for the worse.  Upon entering the school grounds, she wanders on to an attached private property.  The first person she meets is the maid, Matsurika, who works for the Shido family.  After being whittled down to an emotional shell by her insults, Kanako is “saved” by the very lovely Maria Shido.  Maria mentions that her grand father was the previous head master of the school.  Kanako begins the first in a looooooong series of nosebleeds.

Maria Holic Image 3Kanako makes her way to her room, meeting more beautiful women around the school (nosebleeding all the way).  A wrong turn seeking out Maria at the archery club leads her to uncovering the dark secret that Maria doesn’t seem all that concerned with hiding.  Maria is a man.  He also is a cunning, devious, and purely evil person.  He puts Kanako through hell forcing his secret to be hidden, lest he cause her even more untold evils.  Then, he drops a bomb by moving in to her room!

The following day Maria puts the pressure on Kanako by sitting and waiting for her to change.  He would only leave the room is she bowed and begged him to do so.  Maria commits to haunting Kanako to ensure the secret is kept.

Maria Holic Image 2This series delivers laughs, groans and non stop fun.  Hooked!

Exclusive Interview with Adam – Fastest Mirror’s Edge Player in the World

woody

PG: What were your expectations of ME before playing it?

W: I expected it to be as realistic as parkour/free running is today with the exception of giant red checkpoints that you have to follow, and i wanted it to be really competitive for the top spot on the leaderboards.

PG: Has DICE/EA reached any of those expectations?

W: I think they have made it as realistic as it needs to be… but there’s some glitches that make it so unrealistic its not even funny, they need to fix those. Also it is quite competitive on the leaderboards too, but i don’t think anybody wants 1st as much as i do.

PG: How long did it take you to beat the whole game?

W: Haha i don’t really know to be honest, not very long though i had played the demo for a long time so i was already pretty good with the control layout and knew how to go about solving puzzles, i would say somewhere between 2-3 hours.

Quake Live GTFOOH!

Every so often for the last year or so I’ve checked the Quake Live website to see what was going on with it. It all seemed so hopeless. I felt as id Software had betrayed me and it was all a lie. Until today… I checked the website and to my surprise a splash page.

Quake Live Screen Capture

“What is this crap?” I said to myself. Where’s all the text that I had been accustomed to since the day I started looking at it. I decided to read what it said, “coming at you live 02.24.09″ and “no way!” I said. I had to call Kyle (a friend) to confirm what I was seeing is true. Oh, and is it so true. Tuesday people, Tuesday.

For those of you that don’t know what Quake Live is I’ve provided you with a couple links. You geeks out there know what I’m talking about.

Skip Beat Image 1Kyoko is a girl that would do anything for the man she loves. Sho is a rising pop star who left his home town and family business to make it big. Kyoko has loved Sho since they were both little (she lived with Sho’s family growing up). Sho has asked Kyoko to come with him to Tokyo to help him pursue his dream.

In reality,  Kyoko works two jobs and does countless chores for her beloved Sho. She runs herself ragged to keep a nice apartment which she cannot easily afford. She prepares him snacks and meals when he stops by home. She even does the laundry he drops off for her to do!  Kyoko obsesses over Sho every waking moment and would stand up for him in any circumstance.

Skip Beat Image 2Things begin to fall apart when Sho returns from a long trip to pick up clothes, and immediately leaves again.  Kyoko decides to try to see him at this studio and runs into a rather frank and upsetting “discussion” between him and his manager.

Her only recourse? Besides throwing a takeout meal at him… she must defeat him at his own game, Show Business!!  She gets a VERY expensive makeover and hits up the talent agencies.  No… really… that’s what she decides to do.

Now, at first glance, I was prepared to hate this series.  I’m not big on sappy romance, the entertainment industry in general, and especially not interested in melodramatic conflict.  This series, however, pulled me in with its lighter moments and an over the top lead character.

How will all this end?  Why is she holding that daikon?  Watch this series~

Apple Blocks Streaming South Park App

southpark-hates-apple

There’s yet another case of heavy handedness from Apple in rejecting potential apps from the iPhone store. The creators of South Park have put almost all of their back episodes online at South Park Studios for Flash-based streaming, and last year it was announced to fans that they would be putting together an iPhone app to give mobile users access to that content.

Revisiting Super Mario World

YouTube Preview Image

I just spent the past several hours playing Super Mario World. While the “Special World” may have royally frustrated even the toughest crowds, only a modified version of the game truly takes the crown.

It’s originally called “Kaizo Mario World,” but it’s notoriously known on the Internet as “Asshole Mario.” If the seemingly impossible jumps don’t piss you off, just wait for those stupid fucking hidden blocks.

Watchmen, the 8bit Game

picture-11

Got some time on your hands? Good, cause Warners Bros. has just released a free Watchmen 8bit game. This game is so retro right down to the 8bit sound. It kind of reminds me a bit of Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles Arcade game and Double Dragon.

You can take on the role of one of two crime-fighting Watchmen characters, Nite Owl and Silk Spectre. The controls are your left and right arrow keys to move around, the space bar to jump and C and V keys to punch and kick.

iPhone App Review: Wordsworth

Wordsworth is the latest App Store game from the fine folks at 99 Games. A word game similar to the better word games available online like Bookworm and is available for $1.99 (£1.19) in the App Store. Tasked with making words out of a hexagonal grid (that reminds me of Blockbuster) it’s your job to score points and level up. A simple premise for a game but one that will keep you playing for hours on end and draw you back when you put it down. Words can be selected by either single tapping each letter and tapping the submit button or simply dragging your finger over the letter tiles then lifting off to submit. The also game includes Buzzwords, suggested words that when made boost your score, green tiles that increase individual word scores and gold tiles that can be earned by making words 2 or more letters longer than the minimum set word length. Wild card tiles can also appear which can intelligently substitute for any letter. Should you get stuck a quick shake will shuffle the letters, you can also tap on the governor of the game should shaking not be your thing. Shuffling the letters however gives you a timed tile which has to be used before the clock runs out otherwise it’s game over. Thankfully the timer ticks quite slowly giving you plenty of time to get rid of it before time runs out. Each level you reach gains three more shuffles by default allowing you to find those high scoring long words with the remaining shuffles available marked by the number of hats at the top right of your screen.

As you continue through the game you upgrade your rank each time gaining a new title and a new target to get to. On default settings the game is quite easy allowing you to progress quite easy, however this can all be changed with the games options. The minimum word length can be changed from the default 3 words, through 4 and 5 to 6 words increasing the difficulty at each stage. The grid size can also be changed from 4×4 through to 7×7 letters enabling bigger and bigger words. Wordsworth also comes pack with the TWL, SOWPODS and the ENABLE words lists covering all the official Scrabble words and more. The game also comes with some decent non-obtrusive game music which is a good touch, but can be turned off should you want to listen to your iPod library. The sound effects for tile elimination, unrecognised words and levelling up are all well designed adding to the game should you want sounds on. Another nice, logical touch is that the game obeys the mute switch setting on the iPhone (something that many games seem to annoyingly disregard).

Overall Wordsworth is a nice addition to the current stock of word games on the App Store that’s regularly updated with new features and refinements including a new timed mode. A somewhat more relaxing and vocabulary stretching game than alternatives already available and for less than a pint it’s a steal.
