Curiosity Killed the Cat (or started an OS war)

Sat, Feb 28, 2009

I’ve always wondered what it is about human nature, and competition about irrelevant things. Why the clique-less nerds form their own clique? The irony of accusing against terms you should be accused for yourself. What about the redundancy of the cliches that people try so hard to avoid, yet whip it out in common conversation? Why is there such a big OS battle running the community of computer users? It all comes down to one thing. Binary!

I’m sure you are all saying “what is he possibly getting at?”. Heres the thing. A car doesn’t move without a motor. All cars have a motor. All motors do the same thing. WINDOWS, MAC, AND LINUX all speak in BINARY.

I’m not interested in hearing the “who” stole “what” in silicon valley. Because guess what? If they weren’t stealing each others ideas, concepts, technology, etc. There would be no compeition. The evolution of the fast paced technology world would have slowed down dramatically. Where would we be today without it? Without trying to beat each other to the punch, and top one another, we’d see one thing…….ALL THE SAME…..Get it?

What about these patent wars? Aren’t they getting ridiculous? Microsoft patenting the page up/page down button. Thats been on keyboards for years. What gain do they have in patenting that? They didn’t change anything. They didn’t do anything revolutionary. They simply patented something that already existed to add a tally mark to their side of the board. Why would a small business company try and sue Microsoft, Apple and Google for using icon representations of files in an operating system? It’s been going on for years. Thats like trying to change the letter “T” and call it “twu”. Its not going to fly.

And what is with the fanboyism. What can one possibly prove by stating, “My PC can play Left 4 Dead and you payed to much for your Mac”. Want my rebutle?
A: Who cares
B: So What
C: How much does an AlienWare machine cost?

Don’t get me wrong. I believe there is a reason and proper application for everything. If not, it wouldn’t exist. As an IT technician, i’ll tell you the truth. I love my Macs. They make my web design and graphic design a lot easier. My musicianship on drums is just more easily done on a Mac. Now that I started a debate, listen to this; I also record on a PC. I also do websites on a PC. I also do all of my networking on a PC. I also do all of my spreadsheets on a PC and I also do my Gaming on a PC. TUX, don’t feel left out. The web would have a hard time without you’re linux servers running our trusty apache, PHP, and SQL. Don’t feel left out though, PC. Your ASP.net and IIS has it’s place. Trust me, i’ve used it.

I also don’t want to hear the Macs don’t get viruses shenanigans. If you want to get technical, we get the same viruses on Mac as you do on PC. Same things goes for us Linux users. Getting a virus simply means you have the malicious software in your computer. It just so happens that the majority of the worlds home computers are running windows and those are the ones targeted with the viruses so that is why they are affected. Truth be told, there are viruses out for Mac. For Linux, it’s open source meaning, easy to destroy. Look at it this way, it’s not hard to make an executable batch file of sorts on all systems that says “click me” and it simply runs a good old format in terminal or command prompt to erase the hard drive. Looky there, a “virus” that affects all operating systems because of one thing. They all have a common ground. What is it?

A windows, mac, and linux computer walk in a door. Okay i’m not going for a joke here. Heres the basics for a computer.

1: Hard drive
2: Ram
3: Bios
4: Mouse (of some sort)
5: Keyboard
6: Display
7: Processor

Look, basically they are all the same just with different Operating systems. And you know what? Go to the Ubuntu website, download and try Ubuntu. Go to the nearest Apple store and play on the newest iMac. Play on a new Vista machine at the nearest Best Buy. And look……………they all do the basics. Each has their own little niche if you will. Try them out. It’s like a new pair of shoes. If they aren’t comfortable, then don’t buy them. If it fits your walking style, comfort is key.

So lets stop the fanboy battles. No one is better than anyone.  People just have a prefrence. I know I do. It’s all three. Just for different situations and tasks. I’ll tell you now that I have a Linux server running as a file server and web server with a Mac networked for web/graphic design, and a Windows machine networked for database/spreadsheets/gaming.

To Each Their Own. You Buy a Ford. I’ll Buy A Chevy. We’ll Still Meet On The Road

Custom Painted Star Wars Car

eBay user, petermanart, tried to sell his aribrushed car for $20,000 USD. He only had 1 offer for $12,000 which he declined.  The art on this car is very well done, but I’m not sure anyone would want to be caught riding around in a Star Wars fanboy type car.  Especially a Chevy Colbalt.  It’s a shame that all that hard work and great art was wasted on a crappy car.  For more pictures of the car, go past the break.

The Traveling iPod

Fri, Feb 27, 2009

If you are an iPod owner you’ve experienced a well traveled iPod. You’ve traveled the world, the country, or maybe just the roads between you and your friends house. All the while holding your music strong and possibly on the fun occasion overrode the car stereo at the light next to you with your ever handy FM Transmitor. This also means that you’ve most likely collected a little token, a keepsake if you will from your trips and travels. Collecting music from the far reaches of the mountains, or just your friends backyard during your barbecue LAN party.

Soon after you realize that the collectables should be gathered in a nice safe spot to be enjoyed later, at will, via a couple of short clicks. Or maybe you dread the infamous dead iPod battery. Maybe you just updated to the newest model of the Classic or Nano.  What if you are afraid of the dreaded catastrophic hard drive failure and want yourself a backup copy of all your music. None the less, the issue becomes getting the songs onto your new device, and most of us have seen the crazy, wacky iPod file structure. Well friends. Problem solved. I have the perfect App for you. Its call. Senuti (clicking link directs to site). Sorry to burst your bubbles Tux and Windows….its Mac only!

Maria Holic Image 1Kanako holds an idealized vision of her future at Ame no Kisaki Girls School.  Her mother and father met there (her mother as a student and father as a teacher) and eventually fell in love.  She wants to have the same experience in this “magical” place; however, she reveals that she isn’t looking for a man… she wants a woman.  As you will find out, she breaks into hives when touched by a man.

She has yet to learn that her fate is going to take a turn for the worse.  Upon entering the school grounds, she wanders on to an attached private property.  The first person she meets is the maid, Matsurika, who works for the Shido family.  After being whittled down to an emotional shell by her insults, Kanako is “saved” by the very lovely Maria Shido.  Maria mentions that her grand father was the previous head master of the school.  Kanako begins the first in a looooooong series of nosebleeds.

Maria Holic Image 3Kanako makes her way to her room, meeting more beautiful women around the school (nosebleeding all the way).  A wrong turn seeking out Maria at the archery club leads her to uncovering the dark secret that Maria doesn’t seem all that concerned with hiding.  Maria is a man.  He also is a cunning, devious, and purely evil person.  He puts Kanako through hell forcing his secret to be hidden, lest he cause her even more untold evils.  Then, he drops a bomb by moving in to her room!

The following day Maria puts the pressure on Kanako by sitting and waiting for her to change.  He would only leave the room is she bowed and begged him to do so.  Maria commits to haunting Kanako to ensure the secret is kept.

Maria Holic Image 2This series delivers laughs, groans and non stop fun.  Hooked!

Overall Hook Rating:  A

Cooking Mama on your iPhone or iPod Touch

Fri, Feb 27, 2009

cooking-mama-iphone

The hit Nintendo DS game has been ported over to the iTunes App Store.  For $7, you too can pretend you can actually cook a good meal without the need of a George Foreman Lean Mean Fat Reducing Grilling Machine. Of course, the difference between this version and the iPhone/iPod Touch version is that you won’t be using 2 screens.  But it’ll be interesting to see if this game plays better on an iPhone.  Maybe it will be a future sign that Apple might be able to take over the mobile gaming industry?

Google has always been at the forefront of technology.  But, it’s just funny how long it took them to create an official account.  It just comes to show you that Twitter is the future of news and social media.  It has got to be one of the easiest ways to connect, communicate and network with new people.

I heard a saying once:

“Facebook is for the people you have already met.  Twitter is for the people you will meet.”

Start following Google now at http://twitter.com/google. Also, if you have a twitter account and want us to follow you, just start following us at http://twitter.com/pixelatedgeek.
