Sonic Ultimate Genesis Collection

Retro gaming is still one of my fav things to do. But with great games comes huge costs on the old credit card. Between XBLA and the Virtual Console some of my fav titles go for around 8 bucks. Not to be said that the revamps aren’t worth it, but sometimes I feel like I just want them they way they were. Well Sega stepped up and delivered, with Sonic Ultimate Genesis Collection. Yeah certainly one of the longer titles but I guess it’s long for a reason, this collection boasts 40 games.

The Gameplay is super solid. I actually found that the controls were better then some of their XBLA counterparts. Now when it comes to games this collection does not disappoint. You have the Sonic Collection, Golden Axe collection and a couple of old school games that I just love. 2 in particular that I just can’t get enough of were Altered Beast and Space Harrier. One of the biggest things that stands out about this game is the achievements, most of which are built around you beating the first level or collecting a particular score. Most if not all the achievements are pretty easy to get and actually get you to play some games you wouldn’t normally touch.

The Sound Quality wasn’t the greatest but it was a perfect replica to the old Genesis Games Titles. I did kinda wish for Remix tracks especially for Sonic. I feel though that it was a better idea to leave them out. It’s essentially just the way you remember you old games and it’s fun to hear all over again.

The Graphics were a surprise. I was actually quite pleased with how they looked on my widescreen tv. What really sets this game apart is the fact that there is widescreen support. There are some default settings but they also have a stretch feature that let’s you size it to your screen. You also have the ability to smooth out the graphics. Not something that I generally like but it’s nice to have the option.

Overall this is great package for retro gaming. Not only does it have a great price tag of 29.99 but it houses 40 games. Hopefully other companies will follow suit and release their greatest hits.
