  1. I heard this is the last SD con too!

    • gene says:

This is bunk. As a SD local I happen to know that the con is contracted with the San Diego convention center till 2012

  2. matt says:

from what i’ve heard on local radio, they’re working out a deal with the convention center to expand for them… hopefully it doesn’t move away!

  3. Roshawn says:

    The last year is 2012.

  4. Trista Golike says:

The Comic Con magazines and website say that their convention center contract’s committed through 2012. They also say that while admittedly Comic Con’s outgrowing the convention center due to growing attendance, Comic Con has very little interest in moving the location (c’mon, folks, it’s been here for 40 years for big reasons)!

  5. stormko says:

Y’know, it’s kinda bull that they are sold out already. They could easily open up more 4-day passes. The individual day passes are moving at a much slower rate. What makes it really lame is that now people have to guess what days they should buy since Comic Con doesn’t release the scheduling info until much later. For example, Sunday is usually not so eventful, but last year the “Smallville” panel was on Sunday. That’s a big deal for some people who go to Con. But if you hadn’t bought a Sunday pass, then you were screwed. This will especially suck for people coming from out of town.

I think they are purposely offering a low number of 4-day passes in order to force people into buying everything at the singular price. I mean, c’mon. It’s only March. I think it’s pretty obvious that they could sell a lot more 4-day passes if they offered them.

You could say “It’s just business”, but I think it’s a wack way to treat the fans. Especially since Comic Con dramatically raised their entry prices to begin with, and then to do all this when the economy is bad. Pretty lame.

  6. Angge says:

Sales for Comic Con 09 opened up weeks after Comic Con 08, so there was plenty of time for people to buy a four day pass. 09 only sold out this month too, so to any who missed out and didn’t plan ahead, that’s a shame, but it’s also your own fault. It’s not like this was unexpected.

  7. stormko says:

It’s easy to say that, Angge, but the earliest Con has ever sold out was June of last year. And last year was the first time it ever DID sell out before the event. So I think it IS unexpected that it would sell out in early March. There’s no precedent. Add to that, the fact they raised prices dramatically since last year and the fact that the economy has people scrambling to figure out how they are going, and you have a a large number of fans who would normally buy the 4-day pass stuck with paying even MORE now. Not everyone lives in San Diego. It takes time to work that trip out. I’m empathizing with those people.

If they offered more 4-day passes, they would sell a ton. They could easily say, “Danm, who would have thought it would sell out this early?”, and then add some more passes. But they won’t because they know they can force people to buy 3 or 4 days of single passes at a higher rate. And that’s lame enough as it is, but to do it in these economic times is pretty wack.

Stormko, I understand what you are saying, but you must look at it this way as well.

Lets say everyone attending the Con will have $1000 to spend.

Ok, so lets say we just max out the Con with the four day pass only, which would be around 100,000 attendees. Now, each attendee has $1000 to spend, so that would generate $100,000,000 total for the four days (five if you include preview night.)

Now, lets say we cut 75,000 of those four day passes and only 25,000 will be sold. In place, we’ll sell 75,000 single day passes.

    So:
    25,000 x 1000 = 25,000,000
    (75,000 x 1000) x 4 = 300,000,000

    TOTAL: 325,000,000

Obviously, 325 million > 100 million, so you can see where they can make the most money.

Besides, it should be the person’s responsibility for buying the ticket ahead of time. I always buy the following year’s tickets at the Con. Its cheaper, saves me a headache of ordering online, and I have a legit receipt in case something happens to the registration system.

  9. S. David Brown says:

I am one of the regulars at ComicCon that made a mistake and waited too long to purchase the four day pass. Instead, I had to purchase the 4 one days passes at the increased rate. However, my problem is that in doing this, you now have to pick up a new pass every day instead of just once. Preview night is cool, but that’s not even an issue with me. I don’t understand what the difference is with ComicCon between a 4 day pass and 4 one day passes. Regardless, I am going to be there for all 4 days. Now I’m just adding to the amount of work they (and I) have to do. It doesn’t make much sense to me. I don’t even understand why 4 day passes are out if each day is still available!!

  10. talliablink says:

My best friend had this problem last year and had to buy single day passes. She was able to pick up all of her passes on the preview night so she didn’t have to go everyday and get them. Just ask and they should let you pick all of them up.

  11. Andreas says:

The way it works is they are allowed X amount of people in attendance each day. This is mandated by the Fire Marshall. They have to figure everyone with a 4-day pass will be there each day. They don’t want to leave out the people that can only attend one day of the event. So, they only sell y amount of 4-day passes, and then the rest of the attendance limit for each day in single day passes. I buy my 4-day pass for the next year while I am at Comic-Con. It is budgeted into my spending for the weekend. I feel no compassion for those that wait. Sadly for those that waited too long it appears that passes can’t be transferred due to reselling on eBay and Craigslist.

  12. Bob says:

I remember a few years ago before they started selling out of 4 day passes, you could not move at all in the lobby, let alone in the dealers room. With no cap on the attendence, not only is it overcrowded, the air conditioners stop working at a certain point. The A/C can only handle SO many people.
I will also assume that because the economy is in the trash right now, the convention center has probably raised prices on a number of stuff, like the convention center rental and security.

  13. Mark says:

Agree with Bob… too many people. And the scheduling of panels has become lousy. They schedule the good stuff at the same time or very close together forcing you to choose, whereas, in only 4 years ago I could go to pretty much anything I wanted to. Now the lines for most rooms are so long that you have to get in a couple of panels BEFORE the one you really want. Here’s what it comes down to, if you’re not a fan, if you’re just one of these lookie-looks who came because ‘people’ said it was ‘cool’, DON’T GO! I’m one of the geeks who dresses up and all that. The worst thing to see at a comic convention is wannabe fans who will point and gawk and make fun of the real geeks who dress up or whatever. If you just want a freak show, find it elsewhere, because the geeks are getting tired of Comic Con’s recent popularity with wannabes. Can I get an ‘AMEN’.

  14. Carmen says:

I can’t believe I waited so long…this is supposed to be my 10th CCI…I don’t believe it’s sold out…I don’t believe it! and what’s worse, it happened in March?! I didn’t know! Please have sympathy for us lazy procrastinators, it’s built into our brains! We can’t help it. I mean, I can pull money from my savings, and buy all 4 passes now (granted they don’t sell out in the next 24 hours) but the fact that they did sell out 4 months in advance boggles me. and the fact that I’m so out of the loop baffles me, but that’s my personal problem. :) Do you think they’ll somehow release more if any are cancelled or anything like that?

  15. Mark says:

carmen, you may still be able to get in Saturday by registering to volunteer. My friend and my sister both did this a couple days ago. You volunteer 3 hours and you’re in after that. We’ll see how it works. Good luck

  16. S says:

They went faster then last year!

  18. MZBrink says:

The four day passes are not sold out yet. The preview nights are sold out, but you can still purchase 4 day passes without the preview night. The preview night is a FIFTH day.

  19. bedund says:

MZ you’re replying in a thread for the 2009 Comic Con. It’s looong over and next years’ 2010 Comic Con IS already sold out. ALL 4 day passes are completely gone. Go here and read it for yourself.
