I would like to take an aside (to celebrate my birthday week) to cover a slightly older series from late 2007 that I really think never got the coverage it deserved. Potemayo is a very cute series centering around two mysterious creatures that appeared from the depths of Sunao Moriyama’s refrigerator. Potemayo was the first creature to emerge, and Sunao named her after a potato-mayonnaise bun. Sunao is your average high school student, and seems strangely nonplussed by her appearance.
At school we get to meet the other cast members, especially Mikan Natsu. Mikan has a crush on Sunao, but lacks the forward nature to express it. Potemayo seems to sense her feelings, and being protective of her Sunao, scares her off frequently. A little later on in the series, Guchuko appears (slicing though the refrigerator door with her scythe, then repairing it with tape). Guchuko is much shyer than Potemayo, and defends herself suddenly and violently when cornered.
The rivalry between the two little creatures plays out over a number of extremely humorous episodes, and begins culminating when they both begin to ‘blossom’ (flowers start to bloom from their heads). While mistaking this process as Potemayo dieing, the series has a few short but sad moments. However, once the blossoms bear their own fruit, both Potemayo and Guchuko have two small children of their own. This is where the story, sadly, ends.
Weeks later, a few one-off OVAs came along, but no forward progress in the series is made. I cannot overstate how cute this series is and how it endeared itself. If you have a moment, check out the videos linked below:
