It’s been on the cards for a long time, ever since technology turned to the joystick for control of increasingly expensive and often deadly hardware, but gamers can rejoice in the fact that they’re l33t skillz have a purpose in the real war as well as virtual. Adverts running for the British Army already show death bots controlled by the humble 360 joypad (and before you ask why not the PS3 joypad, it’s because M$ has provided Windows and Linux drivers for it), making anyone familiar with the Microsoft console instantly at home with the control concepts.

Mini-whirlybird of death
Reports are now coming in that even the hyper accuracy of the sniper can be taken over by RC death bots. The small military hovering gun platform uses autopilot to take care of all the difficult hovering and manuvering allowing the operator to line up the perfect kill shot from the comfort of HQ. The Autonomous Rotorcraft Sniper System or ARSS for short (does that mean Autonomous Rotorcraft Sniper Experts might be called ARSE?) sports a powerful and precise .338-caliber rifle and is controlled using a modified 360 controller able to fly around for over 6 hours. The purpose of this small manoeuvrable UAV is to provide surgical strikes without the collateral damage associated with more traditional missile strikes from something like a Predator. So next time you hear a small whirlybird spinning overhead this might give you food for thought.
Checkout the 360 joypad in action in the advert for the British Army below, it could be you, Geeks in the army – who’d have thought it?!
