Today we’ll be looking at an app that aims to solve the problem of drunken messaging. We’ve all done it, gone out had a few beers and decided it’s a great idea to send that Ex or annoying boss a message to say your piece. This is where NIMBY, No Intoxicated Messaging By You (not Not In My Back Yard), steps in and attempts to filter out your unsound mind messages before they’re unleashed across the network.

NIMBY allows you to write out your full message, email or tweet in the app but before you can send it you have to answer some simple questions. The questions include simple summation, maze work and other non-taxing things. The beauty comes from the fact that the tasks become increasingly difficult the more intoxicated you get. For those of us that indulge in less legal forms of mind bending, NIMBY should work just fine ending the stupid messages that you’d wished you’d never sent. NIMBY also let’s you save and recall messages in the app and has a few options to tweak but as the apps premise is pretty simple there aren’t many frills to go round.
The app works pretty well, serving it’s purpose. The only problem I forsee is that if you’re determined enough to type out a message drunk on the iPhone, which is a pretty big challenge in and of itself, the fact that this app won’t let you send the message is just going to mean you bypass it all together and go straight to the email or Twitter app. The other thing is that I’m much more likely to send a drunken text than I am an email or tweet. The program would be a lot more useful then if it forced you to use the program after a certain time of day or if you set it on before commensement of drinking for all types of messaging. That said the only way you could possibly do that with Apple’s current restrictions on system access would be with a pretty well integrated jailbroken app. Therefore this app will only work if you’ve got the self control to use it when you’re drunk, which if you did you’d probably not bother trying to send a message in the first place. Still for those who want to use it as a check to see whether it’s an appropriate time to send a message or not when rocking some beers, NIMBY works admirably.
