I told myself that I would maintain some twisted blend of professionalism and nonchalance after coming home from a one-week advanced screening of Star Trek, but OH MY GOD IT WAS JUST SO AWESOME. Creating a movie with generations upon Next Generations of history and franchise is not an easy task. However, director J.J. Abrams managed to shoot a movie that was appealing towards both hardcore trekkies and the general public.
Forgive my ignorance, but I walked into this movie with very little understanding of Star Trek. I’m not a trekkie and I’m light-years away from being one – which is an insult to myself, not the trekkie. However, from the beginning to the end, Abrams tightly held my noobish hand. The movie elegantly guides you through the story of where each character comes from and what they are doing there. The character development happens step-by-step in a very good pace: you see the new character, you learn a little bit about him/her and their role in the film, then they move on to another character.
And then the action happens. And there is a lot of action in the film. Abrams also manages to embed comedy and popular culture into the movie, i.e. “Dammit, Jim!” The entire movie keeps you in your seat from start to finish and everyone. Must. Go. Watch. It. Whether you identify yourself as a Geek, Nerd, Trekkie or “normal” person, you will love it. If you don’t, something might be wrong with you.
By the way, there are no easter eggs at the end of during the credits – don’t bother waiting in your seat. Moving onto the spoilers.

Everyone lives. Okay, well, some people die, but we don’t really learn much about them. But, I mean, did you really expect anyone from the main cast to die?
The REAL Spock (Leonard) is from the future. He tells Kirk what has happened and what Kirk needs to do to stop the bad guys. Namely, he tells Kirk how to kick off the younger present time Spock off of the Captain’s chair of the USS Enterprise. Kirk has to get actual emotions out of Spock for Spock to beat up Kirk. Because of this, Spock shows he is not fit to continue being a captain of a vessel.
Kirk takes the chair. Yeah – after young Spock resigns, Kirk takes the chair, becomes Captain and starts a course of action to defeat the “Romulons.”
That’s it. But hey, go watch the movie. Hell, watch it in IMAX. The movie is worth your money.
