“He is still a chick,” proclaims a vendor on the sidelines of the festival thoroughfare. The animal in question? An oversized chick (baby chicken for those confused) with a beard sitting in the corner of the pen. The only people who seem to take interest in him see resemblances of a past canary and a deceased grandfather in his bearded guise.

Both are probably a touch insane. In the end, they end up at home with their new “chick” – Higepiyo (bearded chick). If the sake that he was drinking in the first scene didn’t surprise anyone; his lust for curry, TV and reading newspapers soon makes the family question their sanity.

In the second episode, Higepiyo helps Hiroshi (the son of the family) fight off a bully who is intent on stealing his bread. Higepiyo finally speaks and fights the bully in a samurai-fashion. This culminates in the family and Higepiyo discussing “taking care of each other”. It’s to be noted that the TV, at one point, is playing a story about a theft of experimental chicks from a local laboratory.

This series provides short and to-the-point mini episodes (approximately 5 minutes long). While it has a quick-and-dirty stylized look, good comedic flow, and easily able to keep the attention span of just about anyone… I really don’t see how far they could take the story/concept before it gets stale.
