Higepiyo Image 1“He is still a chick,” proclaims a vendor on the sidelines of the festival thoroughfare. The animal in question? An oversized chick (baby chicken for those confused) with a beard sitting in the corner of the pen. The only people who seem to take interest in him see resemblances of a past canary and a deceased grandfather in his bearded guise.

Both are probably a touch insane. In the end, they end up at home with their new “chick” – Higepiyo (bearded chick). If the sake that he was drinking in the first scene didn’t surprise anyone; his lust for curry, TV and reading newspapers soon makes the family question their sanity.

Higepiyo Image 2In the second episode, Higepiyo helps Hiroshi (the son of the family) fight off a bully who is intent on stealing his bread. Higepiyo finally speaks and fights the bully in a samurai-fashion. This culminates in the family and Higepiyo discussing “taking care of each other”. It’s to be noted that the TV, at one point, is playing a story about a theft of experimental chicks from a local laboratory.

This series provides short and to-the-point mini episodes (approximately 5 minutes long). While it has a quick-and-dirty stylized look, good comedic flow, and easily able to keep the attention span of just about anyone… I really don’t see how far they could take the story/concept before it gets stale.

Overall Hook Rating: C
