An update to Tap Tap Revenge 2 has enabled push notification on iPhone 3.0. After installing the app users are treated to another settings panel (shown) that enables you to control the push notifications. In this case you can plain turn them off or alter whether you receive badge updates and/or alerts. I’m expecting many apps to jump on the push notification band wagon but this is the first app to activated the hidden preference screens and to actually use the Apple instigated service.
Apple, for those of you who don’t remember, went down the push notification route because of fears that multitasking and general background apps might destroy the already fragile battery life of the iPhone. It’ll be interesting to see what impact push notification has on your average day to day battery life. Most of us that have access to Exchange or Mobile Me use push email anyway and therefore I’m not sure how much more strain additional push contacts are going to make on the phone. As they say, time will tell.
