Razer Sphex Mouse Pad & Laptop Sleeve Review

An old friend of ours, DJ Fillmatic, was able to review the Razer Sphex Mouse pad & laptop sleeve. Here is his review:

So I was chatting with Razer|Grl the other day and she said “Hey Fill, we have a new mouse pad called the Sphex” I said “Oh really?” she then said “Yeah, I’ll send you one to try out.” Lo and behold, a couple days later UPS knocks on my door and the driver says “This is for you.”

Now I’m thinking “how does he know this is for me?” Driver turns out to be a gamer, the box says Razer on it, I’m wearing a shirt that says 1337 on it when I answer the door. Anyway I get this big box like “This is a huge mouse pad.” In true kid like fashion I immediately opened it before even walking back in to the laboratory. Turns out Razer|Grl sent me the Sphex and 17″ Razer Gear Laptop Sleeve (awww, she remembered the size of my laptop without even asking.)

So I pulled out the sleeve, read the Certificate of Authenticity, suspended my laptop and put it in the sleeve… Like a glove. Ballistic nylon goodness with shock absorbing interior. On top of that, nothing says “I’m going to frag you” to people before you even open your laptop like the Razer logo on the sleeve. I mean what more can I say? It’s a laptop sleeve, it fit my laptop, it does it’s job. Thumbs up.

After all the oooohhhh and ahhhhh over the sleeve I opened the Sphex packaging. It’s kind of weird cause it comes in this envelope so you’re basically saying “What the shit did I just get?” You pull it out of the envelope and it’s micro thin, I’m guessing like 6 mils thin (not millimeters but 152.4 microns for those that care.) Super thin.

On the back is a washable/reusable adhesive. The adhesive is strong enough to keep the sphex held down without moving but not so strong that it leaves residue or damages anything. So when you spill your kool aide on it, to clean it all you have to do is wash it off in the sink, let it dry and it’s good to go again.

As far as use of the Sphex, it’s specifically designed to be used with laser mice. It gives me the similar response I get from my Razer Destructor mouse pad. I really think there is more technology in this mouse pad than NASA puts in their preserved food. All in all, this gaming mouse surface is great for gamers and graphic designers. It will give your laser mouse a lot more accuracy than your average Walmart/Office Depot mouse pad and looks cool on top of that. The fact that it’s so thin also helps with extended play. You know what I’m talking about? When you’ve been resting your wrist on an elevated mouse pad it gets irritating after a while. So overall price (19.99) and usability this mouse pad is awesome.

How odes it compare to the Destructor? Which one would you choose to game on?

  3. Fillmatic says:

It just depends on preference. I personally have the option of choosing which pad I want to use, I bring both with me when I go out.

The good part about the Destructor is that you can move it around on the fly mid game. Another good point is that it comes with a case but. The bad point about the Destructor is that… well it comes with a case. It takes up space in your bag. But another good point is that it comes with a cool looking case. Using a laser mouse on either surface is relatively the same.

As for the Sphex, the cool part about the Sphex is that you store it on your laptop screen. The bad part is that you store it on your laptop screen. So if you go somewhere and the table you’re using is not totally flat you’ll be wishing you had your Destructor. For example those grille type tables they put outside of Starbucks.

The fact of the matter is there’s no one ultimate mouse pad. Both pads are great. I’m glad I have the luxury of having both. If I had to choose one. I’d bring the Sphex with me if traveling. It’s always easy to find a flat surface but not always easy to find carry on space.
