While the majority of our readers are dudes, I know there are a handful out there that have watched Sailor Moon. Am I right?

And maybe you’re afraid to admit it, but you have probably watched the show for the sake of gawking over the Sailor Scouts (or “Sailor Senshi” for our Bishoujo Senshi Sailor Moon fans) transforming. You know, because they looked naked.

The age of twelve simply begs for the beginning steps of perversion and the proportionally-enticing teenage girls were ripe fruit for the picking. What kind of guy doesn’t like a chick who wears a short school-girl skirt and while kicking ass?
The show was about the teenage ditz Serena (or Usagi in the Japanese version) who happened to be the key to earth’s survival. With the help of her four friends Amy, Ray, Lita and Mina (Ami, Rei, Matako and Minako in the Japanese version) and their two cats Luna and Artemis, they continuously destroyed any monster that threatened Earth’s existence. Each girl represented a planet in our solar system. Each had their special attack, which took hours to do. A monster would be charging at them, and Sailor Moon would do her “Moon Spiral Heart Attack,” twirl around for five minutes and still have enough time to kill the monster, make out with Tuxedo Mask (Tuxedo Kamen) and eat her favorite foods of cake and ice cream! Shit, if I was that monster, either I would have kicked her ass in mid-twirl or ran my ass out of that situation. The transformation took too long, too, but perhaps that was a favor for the male fans.
Regardless, I loved the girls. They were girly, pretty, and romantic. As a child watching on weekday mornings and on Cartoon Network after school, I didn’t realize how scandalous the series was. Once I was older and understood what was happening, and after I watched the Japanese version, I came to realize that Sailor Moon had a good moral of caring for everyone and everything. Even dating a man that was eligible to be charged for statutory rape. Ahem Darien/Tuxedo Mask!
There was also amusing interaction of the gay and lesbian relationship between Sailor Uranus/Sailor Neptune (Haruka and Michiru) and a few of the villains. It added diversity and humor to the series, seeing as how every Sailor Scout was physically attracted to Sailor Uranus.
Even at 22 years old, I am still in the process of catching up with the entire series. Someday I shall finish it. This series brings back childhood memories of spending time with my cousins in the morning, calling out who our favorite Sailor Scouts (mine happened to be Mercury because she was smart and geeky), grabbing my hair brush and pretending it transformed me into Mercury and killing the bad guys, which happened to be my stuffed animals.

The entire series was never sent towards North America because of many controversial topics for young American kids. For example, in the last season of Sailor Moon (Sailor Stars), there is a male band that transforms into the Sailor Starlights – a trio (Sailor Star Fighter, Sailor Star Maker, Sailor Star Healer) of hot, scantily-clad, monster-fighting females. One of them even had a relationship with Luna. Yes, Luna the cat. The series produced three movies and was initially based on a Manga by Naoko Takeuchi.
Sailor moon reminds all of us that a woman doesn’t have to be just sexy, but powerful as well.
“In the name of the moon, I shall punish you!”

Your favorite WOULD be Mercury.
Also, at the start of the original Manga, Tuxedo Kamen was only 17, though still older than Usagi. Why they chose to make him 20-something in the anime is something I’ll never understand.
My wife was just pawing at the screen, giggling …
I have to say, the liberties taken in the “oh my god we can’t have lesbians” /”no transgendered transformation” English versions were just sad >.> … hey, fuck the story line!
It’s all about Tuxedo Kamen!!!!!
Oh and don’t forget the Animetal Version of the Theme song!!
