For many taking home their brand new iPhone 3G or 3GS was a joyous occasion. One filled with wonder and splendor. And then there are the others who weren’t so lucky.
Over the past few weeks reports have been trickling in about new iPhone’s overheating and in some cases getting so hot that the back cover becomes discolored. And some of the reports are coming from pretty tech savvy folks like PC World’s Melissa J. Perenson and David Coursey. People who might know a thing or two about taking care of a phone. Sites like Gizmodo and Engadget are fueling the flames as well. Featuring this picture below as well as others from more unlucky victims.
Click the break to read Apple’s explanation for the overheating.
Last week Apple posted a few tips on how to prevent overheating and explaining why it may be occurring on it’s support site. And if you were looking for an insightful explanation you’re screwed. According to Apple it’s because users are leaving it in direct sunlight or leaving it in their car. Why? Because according to Apple the temperature tolerance range for the iPhone is -4 degrees F up to 113 degrees F. Giving users extremely helpful tips such as this:
“Store iPhone 3G and iPhone 3GS in a place where the temperature is between -20º and 45º C (-4º to 113º F). Don’t leave the device in your car, because temperatures in parked cars can exceed this range.”
I’m a little skeptical the tech savvy folks like the ones I mentioned earlier would all be leaving their phone on the dashboards of their cars to melt away. As well as the others that have reported the same problem.
Apple also explains that using certain applications for extended periods of time in hot conditions may also cause it to malfunction. Note to self, do not use GPS while walking across the Mojave.
If your phone starts to exeprience problems you may run into this screen
Other symptoms that your phone is about to get piping hot would be a dim screen, weak signal or the device won’t charge. Oh and the slight discoloration of the case and 2nd degree burns on your ear.
What do you guys think of their explanation? Is it a cop out or are these overheating iPhones a coincidence? Have you had issues with yours?
