Tales of Geek Dating: I Won’t Buy You Diamonds, But I Will Buy You an iPod

Remember when Xanga was a big thing? This was a time after RateMyPic.com and before Myspace or Facebook ever existed. Remember when you were able to personalize you blog profile where you could change the colors, background, and add music!

Photo 42I remember when the latest and greatest song came out, you would immediately link that onto your Xanga and let it compliment blogs that usually involved high school drama and whining.

So anyway, one day I went to check the comments on my Xanga. After the page was done loading my ears were immediately filled with a familiar song, a song I did not remember linking onto my Xanga. It was More Than Words by Extreme. You know what song I am talking about. Everyone knows this song. So when it got to the part where front man Gary Cherone graced us with his beautiful voice, it never game up. Instead what came up was my dear boyfriend’s.

That son of a bitch was able to record that song with his buddy late one night, sign onto my Xanga, and link it up all behind my back.

Sounds nerdy, sounds cheesy, it even sounds stupid, but  remember this during a time when Xanga was big. I have to admit, I was the talk of the town with my group of friends. All of them thought it was sweet and some were actually jealous and wishing that their boyfriends would do that.

My boy was really good at surprises, but I noticed when it came to presents he always, ALWAYS bought me something technological. If I asked for a iPod, he got it. If I asked for a thumb drive, he would magically make a Domo Kun 3GB stick appear in thin air. At one point, I needed to back up my entire MacBook Pro on Time Machine, and on that same night he enthusiastically rushed to Fry’s and bought me a 500GB external hard drive.

But that same enthusiasm wasn’t there when it came to other things.

And you know when you watch those romantic movies, you see the handsome leading man spoil his leading lady with expensive things, such as diamonds, pearls, flowers, and beautiful clothing? Well, I guess that was all fictitious….in my case, anyway /sigh.

I asked him to buy me flowers: He replied by saying, “Why should I buy you something that dies after a couple of days. I rather buy you a glass rose, at least that way it lasts forever.”

Clothing: “You don’t need that! You have a lot of clothes!”

Jewelry: “Nah, it’s too expensive. You can’t do anything with it except wear it!”

It wasn’t that he was cheap; my boyfriend was more concerned with “functionality”.

He always pointed out “I want to buy you something that you can use!”

I guess that made sense. It was practical, but sometimes I wanted pretty things. You can’t blame me, I am a lady, but don’t get me wrong, I loved everything he gave me. I cherished them…and, I will admit, broke them at times, but hey, that was alright, because my Nerd would be able to fix it.

So I guess it all works out in the end.

At least when he would buy me stuff, it always came with awesome 24-hour tech support.

lol…I’m not surprised at all. I mean, he is a big tech nerd. We all kinda think alike.
