Arcane Legions is a recent tabletop release from Wells Expeditions. The team of people who thought this game up also created Hero clix, Mage Knight, and Mechwarrior tabletop games. With all the years that have been a tabletop gamer I have never meet anyone who hasn’t had “happy happy thoughts” about Mage Knights or Hero Clix. Though I only played Hero Clix a couple times. After hearing that the great minds behind Hero Clix created a new game I expected great things.
I checked out the website at http://arcanelegions.com/. The fluff associated with Arcane Legions seems thin and uninteresting. I have always been a fan of historical games, but the margin for “Suck” when turning fact into fiction is just so large. Age of Mythology where are you now? If Arcane Legions was going to have mythological creatures I feel they should have used completely fictional characters rather than pulling names out of history books.
Aside from game play, to me, customizing and painting models is half the fun. Arcane Legions is the first table top game I have ever seen to have half of it’s models painted and the other half left untouched. I don’t like that at all. One of the reasons many people really liked Hero Clix, Mage Knight, and Mechwarrior is because all the minis came painted. And they are painted very well all things considered. Because Arcane Legion’s uncommon and rare models come pre-painted, I doubt die hard modelers will have any interest. As for the tabletop gamer who just likes to play good games, I’m sure they won’t mind playing with grey plastic…

At this time none of my local hobby stores have set up demos for Arcane Legions. After researching this game I have very little interest in trying Arcane Legions. With the Warhammer40k Space wolf release, Warhammer fantasy Skaven release in the next few weeks, and the latest release of Monsterpocalypse. I just don’t have the time or money to even consider this game an option. If anyone has played Arcane Legions please let us know what you think.

I first saw this game at the GAMA Trade Show and was intrigued. However, after getting the retail demo kit and putting it together I was less impressed. Sure, it is cheap, but I doubt anyone over the age of 13 will find it interesting enough to spend money on this game.
