All of us film geeks and Halo fan boys already know the sad truth that there will never be a live-action Halo movie. Or atleast not anytime soon. Ever since the first Halo 3 viral ads by Neil Blomkamp came out, everyone, including me, wanted a Halo movie to be made. The ads were a tease of what Niel and WETA could do for the Halo universe and franchise. Now, after the Halo ODST live-action ad came out, I have come to realize that I don’t ever want to see Halo in theaters.
Some might call me crazy for letting go of the dream. But to those people I say, stop and think about this idea. Why not continue in the same fashion they are doing right now. Instead of spending millions of dollars on one movie, why not spend thousands on a web series. It’s working for The Guild, Rooster Teeth, Homestarunner, and the Emmy winning Dr. Horrible. Keep each short film 5 to 10 minutes long, introduce us to different people in the Halo Universe, and continue to work with WETA. Everyone loves the shorts films and mini documentaries that were already made, continue in that fashion. It keeps things interesting and entertaining while not ruining the brand, as so many video game to film adaptations have done.
You can even interchange the directors for each episode. Getting different directors for different stories in the same universe has worked before for BMW Films. I mean, I enjoyed it so much that I bought the DVD. I think there is more longevity and less room for messing up the Halo franchise if done in a tasteful web series.
And with that, I hope to see something like this in the near future. But until then, I guess we’ll have to just settle for the animated series Halo: Legends.
sounds like a good idea… and WETA kicks all kind of ass…
