South Park has been around for quite sometime, sense my early days of High School I’ve been something of a fan. With a huge successful franchise usually brings about a Video Game. South Park has had a couple of these, while I did enjoy the FPS N64 version there hasn’t been any that have caught my eye. Well that was until I heard there was going to be a South Park Tower Defense Game. I was first introduced to Tower Defense with Field Runners on the iPhone sense then it’s been something of an addiction. How does South Park’s leap into the Tower Defense Genre hold up?

Gameplay

Well it’s kinda obvious what the Gameplay is going to largely resemble, it’s even in the title. It’s a Tower Defense game. If you never played a Tower Defense game this is the basics. You have a large field in which your protecting and you have to build Specialty Towers to defeat the invading army. As the game progresses so does the difficulty, the goal is to constantly updated the field with more towers and upgraded towers to give you the edge. South Park takes the concept and adds a little something to that and that’s character. I’m not just talking about the whole South Parkafying of the Tower Defense genre. They actually give you 4 characters to control all with their own unique abilities. They essentially work like Mobile Towers, yet you also use them to build Towers. My personal favorite thing about the added characters was the Supers that come with them. As your character kills more of the horde eventually they are fully charged to release a Super. The Supers are more or less there to save you ass and they do come in handy. The whole character concept helps break some of the slow down time that happen in Tower Defense games. Usually you more or less watching your creation rather then participating in the mayhem. While the game does have a large potential it sorta fizzles. With controls being a little difficult to pickup. The added characters also adds another thing for you to manage which allows you to become easily overwhelmed. The rest of the game is broken up into a Campaign and Challenge based combat. As you beat Campaigns and Challenges you’ll unlock various characters and clips from the series.

Sound

It’s what you would expect from a South Park game, various quotes from the series and a great sense of humor. The only downside is it get’s a bit repetitive after a while. You’ll often be greeted by the same quote by your character over and over, it’s funny the first time you hear it but after about the 20th your spent.

Graphics

Simply put this game is one of the better looking South Park games out there. If your a fan you’ll recognize a lot of characters from the series and they all look just like they do in the show. The Animations are all exact and they control much like you would expect the character would. The HD Graphics also add a bit of crisp look to the game that really brings out the characters.

Overall

While this game is an interesting addition to the Tower Defense Genre it’s certainly not the best one I’ve played. It’s a interesting concept that would seem to work better via multiplayer. If you like South Park and Tower Defense it’s certainly one to at least try the Demo with.
