Dear Geekster2012,
I have no idea what the big deal is. I haven’t bought the game because I’m not a fan of the super hardcore FPS type games. I’m more of a spray and pray kinda guy, hence why I love Left 4 Dead, Left 4 Dead 2, and Team Fortress 2. Now let me find out what the whole hubbubaloo is actually about.
Well damn. That is kinda crazy. So, you’re asking what the big deal is about? Well, on one side you got people complaining that the video game is making people feel and act like a terrorist in the video game. Because of this, people might go on terrorist rampages because they might feel like its as easy as a video game.
And on the other side, you have smart people. The people who can tell virtual from reality. The people who understand that video games don’t kill people. Guns People do. The people who, if they have children, would make sure they don’t play these types of games or teach them what the difference between virtual and reality.
The only big deal about this is that it is something new and something very graphic from an FPS game. Oh, and that it is easy bait for the media and those stupid parents that like to blame society and everything else in the world for their own bad parenting.
So, that’s about it. Yes, that mission is very shocking, but I doubt any terrorists will be born from this. Again, it’s just stupid parents and media over hyping this easy bait.
Thanks for the question Geekster2012.

ahaha the whole deal with it is that an american cia kills all these innocent people then russia trys to take over america so russia is pissed off that we think thats going to happen haha
MW2 isn’t hardcore. It’s just as spray-and-pray as any other FPS and perhaps even more so given that it is a direct console port.
Since you haven’t played it you can get a good idea of how the campaign plays out (not well) on Rock, Paper, Shotgun. It’s on the front page a few posts down.
I’d link you to it but the terrible spam filter installed on this blog doesn’t understand the difference between a legit comment and spam so I can’t. D:
Yeah, to save us from having to manually filter all comments we have employ a pretty harsh filter. If you want to post a link you can, but it will be held in spam until someone manually authorises it.
Sorry, it’s just the way it is.
Now let me preface this by saying that I personally didn’t find it offensive, but I can see why someone would.
The big deal over this has been made by the fact that it can all be skipped without losing anything from the gameplay or the story. So the point is, if it’s not integral to the story why is it in there? Is it just to cause a stir and get publicity? Perhaps. Is it pushing boundaries? Definitely. Should it be in there? Well that one is up for debate.
They could have made it a cut scene and it would have told the story just as well, its the fact that you’re actually doing it that makes people go bananas.
The problem I have with a majority of the arguments against MW2 is that kids should not be subjected to this kind of thing in a game. Fair enough I whole-heartedly agree with that, kids should not be allowed to play a game with graphic violence like that.
THAT’S WHY THE GAME IS RATED 18!
It’s not the fault of Activision or IW that kids are playing it. It’s the fault of the parents. Perhaps the stores have to take some of the blame if they’re selling to minors but in a majority of cases it’s the parents that buy the game for their kids.
Now don’t get me wrong, some parents will buy the game and sit down with their kid and play it through with them, making sure they understand the social and moral implications of the scenes taking place, but the majority of parents won’t even sit in the same room as their kids.
Now why Russia has kicked up a stink, well that’s the rather unfair portrayal of Russians in the game, but that’s nothing new really. Most bad guys in games of yesteryear were Russian, and a horrible stereotype of Russians at that. So, fair enough if they don’t want it sold like that in Russia, but surely they should have checked through it before it was released?
Anyway, controversial or not, it’s a fantastic game that as a 24 year old man, I can enjoy with enough nonce to know that I will never go into an airport and shoot people.
”The people who understand that video games don’t kill people. Guns do.”
Wtf? Guns don’t kill people, people kill people. Blaming it on guns is no better than blaming it on videogames. Guns CAN kill people, but they can also be used for hunting or shooting at non-human targets.
Or was it supposed to be funny? In that case… Hah..ha… i think…
Ok. My fault. Bad choice. Yes. People kill people. I’ll edit my post.
