Artist of the Week: RocketShoes

This weeks artist is RocketShoes. I happen to find my way to RocketShoes gallery after a fun search for some Team Fortress 2 artwork. From that point on have been enjoying all the pieces posted. Here’s a short interview with RocketShoes. Be sure to check out the Deviant Art Gallery.

Tell us a bit about yourself:
I work as a professor of Sequential Art at the Savannah College of Art and Design and am in the process of returning to self publishing comics. My latest project, “Cy and Rocket” is currently in progress and in the meantime I’m drawing a TF2 comic this winter break for fun. When I’m not drawing comics or teaching, I’m usually playing video games…copious amounts of video games.

What’s been your inspiration for art?
A lot of it can probably be attributed to being raised with video games and cartoons. I was definitely a Disney kid. I also spend quite a bit of time reading—news, books, forums, blogs—which help build new ideas. I should probably say my gaming buddies as well because,honestly, they always make me want to draw.

What supplies do you use for your art?
I just recently bought a Cintiq 12W and so now I’m working all digital, which saves an amazing amount of time and paper. I do everything freehand in Adobe CS3 with either the brush or pencil tool.

Any advice for beginners?
Be open minded and curious about everything. When Brandon Graham recently visited the college he told the students in his workshop something like “draw comics as if you’re being chased”. I honestly think this is amazing advice for any artist. You’ve really gotta throw yourself into it and attack the page. It’s really easy to get into the habit of saying “I’ll learn/do/draw that tomorrow”. Why not today?
