E3 isn’t just about the games. That’s a big part of it, but it’s also an opportunity for third party accessory companies to showcase some of their new products. We got the chance to head over to Nyko’s booth during the convention to take a look at some of their new and upcoming products for the Wii and PlayStation 3.
Jump past the break to check out Nyko’s new offerings.
Wand+ and Wireless Kama – Nintendo Wii
The Wand+ is Nyko’s answer to the Wii Motion Plus. Unlike the standard Nintendo Wii Remote, which requires the purchase of the Wii Motion Plus add-on to be able to use newer, Wii Motion Plus-equipped games. The Wand+, however, is essentially a Wii Remote and Wii Motion Plus rolled into one package and is intended to be compatible with Wii Motion Plus games, offering full one-to-one movement detection.
Along with the Wand+, Nyko is also rereleasing their Wireless Kama, their version of the Nunchuk. The Kama, like the Wand+ is compatible with Wii Motion Plus games and is wireless thanks to a dongle that attaches to the Wii Remote. The dongle itself has also been redesigned, made smaller in order to fit with the Wii Remote Jacket. Also, the entire Kama has been outfitted with Nyko’s new Soft Feel Surface, as has the Wand+, which feels rather soft and smooth to the touch, while still giving gamers a good grip on the controller.
Raven Wireless Controller – PlayStation 3
Nyko’s new Raven controller for the PS3 definitely seems like an interesting alternative to Sony’s Dual Shock 3. Offering full rumble and Sixaxis support, plus Nyko’s Soft Feel Surface, the Raven seems to be tailored a bit more like an Xbox 360 controller. The controller is offered in a normal Sony configuration, with both thumbsticks located at the bottom, and an Xbox configuration with asymmetrical thumbstick placement as is standard on an Xbox 360 controller. The shoulder buttons are similar to those on the 360 controller as well, with the L1 and R1 buttons similar to the 360′s bumper buttons, and the L2 and R2 buttons similar to the 360′s trigger buttons, which curve upwards, unlike the PS3′s, which curve downwards.
The Raven is offered as a cheaper alternative to Sony’s Dual Shock 3, which runs at $54.99 MSRP. One of the reasons for this is the absence of Bluetooth technology. As such, while it is still a wireless controller, it achieves wireless functionality through use of a wireless USB receiver. However, the lack of Bluetooth seems to be a minor issue and it’ll be interesting to see how the Raven stacks up to the Dual Shock 3.
Charge Station and Charge Station Quad – PlayStation Move
With the PlayStation Move set for release later this year, Nyko is prepping their own charging station for it. While the Move Controllers charges by connecting to a USB port, newer PS3 models only have 2 USB ports, limiting how many things can be charged at once. The Charge Station uses AC power to charge rather than plugging into the console itself and comes in both a two port and a four port model. The Charge Station and Charge Station Quad are set to be released around the release window of the PlayStation Move, with the regular version retailing for $19.99 and the Quad retailing for $29.99.
