Top 5 Games of 2011

The new year is upon us, and that means we have a whole year to game before the Mayans return from outer space to harvest us for batteries to power their space dance parties.  And what a year we have to look forward to!  2011 looks like it is going to have an impressive slate of games for us to devour.  With that in mind, it is time to look ahead to what should be the best titles of the year.  So here are my Top 5 Games of 2011.

5) Little Big Planet 2

Booga Booga

Little Big Planet is fun on a disc.  The original introduced us to Sackboy, undeniably one of the most identifiable mascots Sony has ever created.  The game play was also no slouch, transporting us to a whimsical world full of fun challenges and colorful settings.  Evil sumos and skeleton bridesmaids are just some of the fun characters you can find in Little Big Planet.  Little Big Planet 2 looks like it is going to be even more fun making everything bigger and better than the original.  Plus, I hear there are evil cupcakes.  Now that is something I can relate to.

4) Batman: Arkham City

Two-Face: "So glad you could hang around." Thank you ladies and gentlemen.

Batman: Arkham Asylum was the greatest Batman ever, which unfortunately isn’t saying much.   However, it was more than a great Batman game; it was a fantastic game no matter the subject matter.  The game allowed you to feel like you were actually Batman, while also creating one of the most realistic game worlds this side of Bioshock’s Rapture.  The sequel looks to open up the gaming world, giving you even more freedom to feel like the big, bad, Dark Knight himself.

3) Mass Effect 3

Mass Effect, and its sequel Mass Effect 2, were amazing successes that brought us a science fiction epic that rivals anything we have seen in gaming to date.  Commander Shepherd and his crew have won over the hearts of many gamers.  Mass Effect has introduced us to their fantastic “conversation wheel”  that adds a whole new element to the RPG genre.  Mass Effect 3 is bringing the fight to earth, and gamers will be glued to their seats, eating up all of Commander Shepherd’s latest adventure.

2) Elder Scrolls 5

So...what's up?

Bethesda has spent a lot of time during this console generation on reviving the Fallout brand and have succeeded magnificently.  Still, many fans have played Fallout in anticipation for the newest instalment in the Elder Scrolls series.  After months of speculation, Bethesda debuted a trailer for Elder Scrolls 5 at this year’s VGAs, and Jame H. promptly and openly wept with joy.  He’s excited.

1) Uncharted 3

The Uncharted series is hands-down my favorite thing to come out of this console generation.  Nathan Drake, Sully, Elena, Chloe and the rest of the crew have endeared themselves to millions of gamers.  The first Uncharted introduced us to the crew and blew gamers away with its impressive cinematic feel.  The second one built on the first and got more perfect review scores than you have fingers and toes.  Uncharted 3 immediately looks impressive, with the developers already releasing videos of a level that is still months away from being finished.  That is confidence.  I can’t wait to see what aventure the guys at Naughty Dog cook up next.
