The countdown to The 3rd Birthday continues nearing its end as Square Enix continues to tease fans with the continuous release of new footage. With less than two weeks to go until the game launches on the PlayStation Portable, Square Enix has unveiled a few more features of the game and a taste of the story itself.
While the story cutscenes don’t reveal much about the overall plot, given that they appear to be taken from early in the game, one thing is definitely made clear: Aya Brea is being kept under observation, practically imprisoned, possibly due to her unique abilities. Aside from that, we are introduced to the new cast of characters, including the hostile Hunter “Boss” Owen and tech geek Dr. Blank.
Two of the game’s mechanics are showcased: Over Energy and Liberation. Over Energy, which is handled by installing DNA chips collected over the course of the game, handles Aya’s special abilities such as healing or her patented Energy Shot from the first Parasite Eve. The Over Energy video, however, only shows how the abilities are unlocked, not a practical demonstration of how they work in game. Guess Square Enix wants to leave that for the player to figure out.
Liberation, Aya’s ultimate ability in the original game, makes a return, albeit in a different form. This is understandable given the gameplay change. While in the original Liberate delivered a series of powerful attacks, The 3rd Birthday‘s Liberation attack gives Aya a boost in speed, ability, and power.
