Review: Poker with Bob [iPhone/iPod Touch/iPad]

Poker with Bob is an app that is available on iTunes for the iPhone, iPod Touch, and iPad for $.99.

Story

Poker with Bob is the riveting tale of Bob, a man with no legs and a chin too big for his face. Resigned to a life of solitude, his only solace comes from the endless games of poker to which he challenges you.

Really, though, what do you want from me? It’s a poker game. Any scrap of story would only weigh down the game with unnecessary deails.

Gameplay

Well, that sure is poker. Albeit a more convenient, handheld version of poker that doesn’t require face-to-face contact like the real version does. But still, if you don’t like poker, there’s little the game could do to convince you to like it.

The mechanics, however, pleasantly surprised me. Poker actually transferred very well to a touch screen environment – there are no complicated finger swipes or patterns to attempt, only buttons to tap.

Graphics

The overly cartooney mascot kept the tone of the game upbeat and casual. I’m not an avid poker player, but Bob’s animated expressions and movements kept my attention far longer than a faceless set of cards would have.

Audio

Just like the graphics, the audio in Poker with Bob keeps the game fresh slightly longer than a typical game of cards would. You can hear the dismay in Bob’s voice when you beat him, and likewise the jaunty happiness when his hand trumps yours. “Aha, I had a flush!”

Overall

In short, Poker with Bob is made for poker players on the go. It’s not exactly making any waves, but it is at least a modern twist on a classic card game. Plus, you don’t have to feel guilty about wagering ridiculous amounts of money – after all, it’s not real. And priced at only $0.99 (in REAL money), it’s not a hard decision for poker fans.
