Best of E3 2011 – Best Awesome: Star Trek

With E3 being one of the largest gaming conventions in the country, there should be no surprise of the amount of games available to demo. There were plenty to choose from, but some stood out more than others. We here at pixelatedgeek.com decided to honor these games with an award: The Best of E3. One game in particular received a very limited debut, only a brief trailer at the Sony press conference. Once I saw the trailer I immediately cried out, “Beam me up Scotty!”  Paramount Digital’s Star Trek has won our Best Awesome of E3 award!

Now before I go into more depth, the game is set in the J.J. Abrams universe of Star Trek. And while it’s set in that universe, it’s not a movie tie-in game. It’s a stand-alone story that takes place between the first and second movie. And, naturally, it contains the patented Abrams “lens flare” techniques. While at E3, both Raul and I had a behind-the-scenes look at the game and what to expect from the title.

If the trailer didn’t give it away, the gameplay is a third-person, two-player, co-op shooter. Most exciting is that players take on the roles of either Spock or Kirk. In fact, the demo showed variety in each of the character’s personality: Spock is more logical and thinks out the situation while Kirk barrels in.  The character diversity is explored even through the use of weaponry: Kirk’s special, captain’s-only phaser had quite a kick to it, while the Vulcan phaser was much more accurate and didn’t overheat as easily.

Even though we saw only a pre-alpha version of the game, it looked fantastic. The team is also working very closely to Bad Robot and is making sure everything is very accurate according to the newly established universe. Here’s hoping for a very solid Star Trek game. (Trust me when I say that we Trekkies need it.)
