Nuu MiniKey – iPhone 4 Slide Out Keypad [Gadget Review]

When Steve Jobs first introduced the iPhone, many people were skeptical about the on-screen virtual keyboard.  Most were already used to a physical keypad. This is especially true for Blackberry users.  While many iPhone users have trained their thumbs to accept the virtual keyboard, there are still some that need the real thing.

What’s in the box:

  • Nuu MiniKey pad
  • Micro-USB cord
  • Instruction manual

Features

After placing your iPhone 4 into the case, you’ll immediately notice that your phone is quite thick, and the front part of your phone is very exposed.  If you drop your phone, you would most likely be getting cracked glass artwork on it.  The Nuu MiniKey slides down and back up very easily.  There is an on and off switch that you could just leave on the entire time; if you leave the switch on, the Nuu MiniKey will turn itself off and disconnect its bluetooth signal with the phone after ten minutes of non-usage.  Once you slide the keypad down, it’ll automatically turn itself on and connect to the phone’s bluetooth signal.  The keypad is also backlit for easy typing in any situation.

Overall Opinion

The Nuu MiniKey is lightweight and very easy to use.  However, many apps aren’t designed to be used with a physical bluetooth keypad and leave a huge blank area on the screen when using the Nuu MiniKey (e.g. Facebook). If you’re not a fan of the virtual on-screen keyboard, then the Nuu MiniKey is something you might want to try. If you’re already used to the iPhone virtual keyboard and don’t mind “fat-fingering” while typing, then the Nuu MiniKey is something you could pass on.
