Bluesday Review: Thor

The God of Thunder strikes down on Blu-ray: but does he create the perfect storm, or is this just overcast?

I started getting into the Thor comic books about five years ago. I’ve always enjoyed this character. Like everyone else, I looked forward to the movie debut. I enjoyed it in theaters, but was waiting to see how it would hold up on Blu-ray. The film itself doesn’t disappoint.

Visuals

Thor is clear and crisp. The CGI looks sharp and lifelike. Bifröst, also known as Rainbow Bridge, really shines. The colors of the film, such as Asgardian gold from Asgard and the warm tone of the New Mexico desert are magic for the eyes. Soft, cool blue colors enhance the chilling (no pun intended) experience of Jotunheim, world of the Frost Giants.  It’s nice to see a film that can blend the CG footage with live action seamlessly.

Sound

Thor’s booming voice does just that. Overall, the sound is sharp and clear. If you enjoyed the score of the movie in the theater, it sounds amazing on Blu-ray.

Special Features

The behind-the-scenes features of Thor were enjoyable but I can’t help feel as if something were missing.  Eleven deleted scenes provide more backstory in the relationships between the characters.

The “Road to the Avengers” featurette is a nice, overall introduction to the Marvel film continuity, including small clips and a few interviews. It is only three minutes long, so it leaves Thor fans and Avengers fans wanting more.

“Marvel One Shot: the Consultant” ties in the after-the-credit segment from the Incredible Hulk. It was  enjoyable and clever.

Content

The Blu-ray also includes a DVD and digital copy of the film.

Verdict

If you didn’t catch Thor in theaters, definitely watch it on Blu-ray if you have the chance. If you are a fan, you won’t regret the purchase.  The only thing holding me back is the slightly underwhelming special features. I was hoping for more.

The Blu-ray retails for $24.99.
