Batman: Year One Review

The Knight has come to the city of Gotham, and the streets will never be the same again. Two heroes have come to save the city that has fallen to its dark criminal elements. One hero fights corruption among the corrupt while the other fights evil from the shadows.

Batman: Year One chronicles the tale of Bruce Wayne’s return to Gotham and Lieutenant James Gordon’s arrival to a city where the mob rules all. Faithfully adapted from Frank Miller’s story with an homage to the art of David Mazzucchelli, this newest addition to the DC Animation library does not disappoint.

From the acclaimed animation producer Bruce Timm and returning animation directors Sam Liu and Lauren Montgomery, Miller’s take on Batman’s beginings is a dark one skewing the standard cannon that most casual Batman fans are used to. Our Comic Issues heroes have seen Batman: Year One already and in their first Video Review break down the good, the bad, and the awesome in this latest DC Animation release.

After making the Batman: Year One Video Review we also got the chance to watch the exclusive animated short, Catwoman. This sexy and fierce Catwoman adventure written by Paul Dini is a fair departure from the Selina Kyle that has been portrayed in The Animated Series or other animated representations of her. This version is sexually confident while also being a badass chick. The story is simple yet exciting, with an appreciated tie-in to Year One, making it stand tall along side the other DC Showcase shorts like The Spectre and Green Arrow.

The Blu-ray special features are also a sweet addition to the movie and short. In it comes a Creative Team Commentary, a preview of the DC’s next animated film Justice League: Doom, and two bonus Catwoman cartoons picked by Bruce Timm. All together this makes Batman: Year One a strong recommendation from the Comic Issues Crew for any fan of Frank Miller and of the DC Animation library thus far.
