It’s that time of the year again. The house falls silent while the kids are away getting their noses into some books or tablets or whatever it is kids do these days to get their learn on. So you’re left with two things: 1. An empty couch. 2. Untouched vacation money. Pixelated Geek is here to help you rectify this grave dilemma with a look at some new releases coming at you, starting September 4th.

This is going to be a big week for television on DVD, with releases like The Office: Season Eight, Parks and Recreation: Season Four and Fringe: Season Four.

While it will not be the busiest week for Blu-ray releases it is worth noting that Hocus Pocus will finally be coming to your home in high definition and don’t worry, we’re all guilty and a little uncomfortable with how fine Sarah Jessica Parker looks in it. One more high definition blast from the past worth a shout out is Arachnophobia, the movie that has a different take on the “bit by a spider” story and makes you itch just by watching it. Just imagine those fuzzy little legs in all of their HD glory!

If you’ve been to a comic shop in the past month or so, there’s a chance that you were handed your goodies in a promo bag for a strange looking flick called Branded. Ready or not, here it comes, in theaters September 7th. Don’t know what it is? You’re not alone; most of the people on YouTube are still scratching their heads. From what is discernible, this movie plays on themes reminidcent of They Live i.e. one man can see a bunch of aliens living among us and humans are blind to their codes embedde in corporate branding. The trailer doesn’t show any shotgun toting or bubble gum chewing so it might be safe to say that it isn’t a total knock-off, and it might have what it takes to become a cult classic.

Don’t forget that September also means DC Comics is going to be releasing “zero” issues for most if not all of their current series. If you haven’t been following DC’s New 52, the zero issues will be the origin stories for all of your favorite heroes, but don’t be so quick to expect the same story you’ve been told a million times over. This year’s Batman Annual issue featured a Mr. Freeze story that carried some familiar tones through most of the book, but it wasn’t until the end that a major twist was revealed to throw the reader off guard and to remind us that “New 52” isn’t just a name, but an entirely different continuity, (which explains JLA 12’s Superman/Wonder Woman hook up) so expect the unexpected. If you haven’t been keeping up with the New 52 and would like to, there is still time to hop aboard! All of the series are currently only 12 issues in, (some are 13 if you count “Annual” issues) and they’re about to begin new story arcs starting with issue 13.
