Sony Announces Playstation 4

In a particularly detail-oriented Press Conference, Sony announced its next generation Playstation 4 in a particularly detail-oriented press conference, including such tidbits as its release date, technical specifications, and a slew of details surrounding its launch.

First and foremost, the Playstation 4 will launch during the 2013 holiday season (exact date TBD), and will feature a shiny, new touch-sensitive DualShock 4, as well as a brand new interface and a reimagining of the Playstation Network. Also absolutely earth-shattering was the announcement of a partnership with PC juggernaut Blizzard and the release of Diablo III for both PS3 and PS4. The degree to which this could skew the balance of the fight for the living room cannot be underestimated.

Several announcements were somewhere short of unexpected, like Unreal4 support for Sony’s new console, or the presence of Bungie’s multi-platform Destiny. Square Enix is also working on a Final Fantasy title for the PS4, which only comes as a surprise since Versus XIII is still floating out there in the ether.

While all these titles were quite graphically impressive, few managed to upstage Guerilla’s Killzone Shadow Fall

Oddly enough, it should be noted that the entire evening went by without the actual presence of the Playstation 4, leaving those of us who are still excited about the idea of a system made entirely from pudding, radioactive gel, or kittens a few more days to hope.
