[E3 2013] Impressions South Park Stick of the Truth

While the Ubisoft booth was bumping with newly announced titles. There was a rather long line to see the upcoming South Park Game developed by resident Irvine company Obsidian. With Matt Stone and Trey Paker dropping by the booth, you knew this game was something to behold. We made our ways to see the glorious South Park RPG.

Since I was familiar with the previous South Park video games, I had a general idea of what this game would be like. And what I witnessed was sheer bliss, a game that looks almost indistinguishable to the TV show. The presentation blew my mind as much of the show’s humor was clear and present.

The game takes place in the familiar quiet little mountain town, though the boys are playing a live-action game of what amounts to Dungeons and Dragons. Various factions have formed in search of the “Stick Of Truth”. You play the new kid, a newcomer to South Park, and you have sided with Cartman in an attempt to get the Stick of Truth back from Kyle and Stan and their faction of Elves.

The gameplay is just amazing, with flatulance – such as the ability to light said excrement on fire – taking the very front and center. This is supposed to represent how a 4th grader would interpret magic. The various uses for this and other peculiar “abilities” gives the game a very dynamic playstyle, much like the Mario and Luigi RPG where you can attack the baddies before entering a turn-based combat.

Overall I’m very excited about this title. It appears Obsidian certainly understands the South Park franchise and brought a very humorous and spot-on representation of the show.
