[E3 2013] Konami Releases New Metal Gear Solid V: The Phantom Pain Trailer

Metal Gear Solid V‘s unveiling at the Game Developers Conference in March introduced gamers to the FOX Engine, Kojima Productions’ mind-blowing new gameplay engine. If there was something that got people talking more than the FOX Engine itself, it was the controversial decision to replace David Hayter as Naked Snake/Big Boss and speculation about who would replace the legendary Metal Gear icon.

Now, with the recent revelation that Keifer Sutherland will be taking over the role, it’s time to shift focus back to what’s important: the game itself. And there’s no better way to do that than with a new trailer.

The new gameplay trailer unveiled at E3 2013 showcases what may very well be the darkest entry in the entire franchise, as well as the potential of Kojima’s new FOX Engine.

Taking place in 1984, things seem to have taken a dark turn for Big Boss as his path continues to lead him closer to Outer Heaven, driven by revenge along with ally Kazuhira Miller. Among returning characters Big Boss (now labeled Punished Snake), Kaz Miller, Huey Emmerich, and Ocelot, MGSV seems to have quite an interesting cast of new characters.

One in particular, a child named Eli, seems to be a dead ringer for a young Liquid Snake. Given that Liquid would be 12 in 1984 according to the official timeline, Eli being Liquid is quite plausible.

Metal Gear Solid V: The Phantom Pain will be available on PlayStation 3, PlayStation 4, Xbox 360, and Xbox One. Differences between the current-generation and next-gen versions have yet to be announced. No release date has been given.
