Movie Issues: Zombie Flicks To Enjoy This Halloween

Zombies. They are the most popular “monster” of the last 10 years. It’s a close call between them and the vampires. Both have had a massive resurgence in pop culture recently and haven’t stopped since. With the success of “The Walking Dead,” the zombie genre just can’t be stopped, not unlike the undead coming back to life. So if zombies are your thing, then you might find some of our recommendations right up your alley this Halloween.

Night of the Living Dead

The George Romero classic that started it all! This is a must-see classic before you can move on to other zombie flicks. Know your history. Seven people are trapped in an isolated farmhouse and are living an unspeakable nightmare. Cannibalistic zombies have been awakened from the dead and are on a relentless killing and eating binge.

Dawn of the Dead (1978 and 2004)

The dead have become zombies, stalking in an endless quest to feed on those who remain alive. A group of desperate survivors in a Wisconsin town seek refuge in a large indoor mall, where they must learn not only to protect themselves from the zombie horde, but also to co-exist with each other.

Night of the Creeps

In this campy chiller, college couples in 1959 see an object plummet to Earth like a meteor. A boy accidentally swallows a space-slug that shoots out. In 1986, two freshmen roam the campus and stumble across the corpse of the boy who swallowed the space slug. Once thawed, the corpse comes to life. Not zombies per say, but it is a fun undead flick.

Zombieland

One of the best zombie flicks ever! Two men have found a way to survive a world overrun by zombies. Columbus is a big wuss, but when you’re afraid of being eaten by zombies, fear can keep you alive. Tallahassee is an AK-totin’, zombie-slayin’ badass whose single determination is to get the last Twinkie on earth. As they join forces with Wichita and Little Rock, who have also found unique ways to survive the zombie mayhem, they will have to determine which is worse: relying on each other or succumbing to the zombies.

Shaun of the Dead

A man decides to turn his moribund life around by winning back his ex-girlfriend and reconciling his relationship with his mother. Oh, and fighting off the entire town that has returned from the dead to eat the living. Simply one amazing flick from the mind of Simon Pegg, Nick Frost, and Edgar Wright.

28 Days Later

A powerful virus is unleashed on the British public following a raid on a primate research facility by animal rights activists. Transmitted in a drop of blood and devastating within seconds, the virus locks those infected into a permanent state of murderous rage. Within 28 days the country is overwhelmed and a handful of survivors begin their attempts to salvage the future, little realizing that the deadly virus is not the only thing that threatens them.

Grindhouse Presents Planet Terror

In Robert Rodríguez’s Planet Terror, two doctors find their graveyard shift inundated with townspeople ravaged by sores. Among the wounded is Cherry, a dancer whose leg was ripped from her body. As the invalids quickly become enraged aggressors, Cherry and her ex- boyfriend Wray lead a team of accidental warriors into the night.

Dead Alive

Lionel, an innocent young man, is forced to care for his domineering mother and finds the task a whole lot more demanding after she’s bitten by the cursed Sumatran rat monkey. Passing the point of death, Lionel’s mother sucks friends and family into her gruesome existence among the living dead and Lionel is sent spiraling into a ghoulish nightmare.

Dead Snow

When a group of medical students takes a sex-and-booze-fueled ski vacation to a remote cabin, they uncover a dark secret from WWII that resurrects a battalion of uncontrollable, unstoppable and extremely undead Nazis. What follows is a blitzkrieg of bloodshed, body parts, and action-packed zombie carnage.

Return of the living dead

On his first day on the job at an army surplus store, poor Freddy unwittingly releases nerve gas from a secret U.S. military canister, unleashing an unbelievable terror. The gas re-animates a corps of corpses, who arise from their graves with a ravenous hunger for human brains! And luckily for those carnivorous cadavers, there is a group of partying teens nearby, just waiting to be eaten!

Well, we hope that these help a little this season to fulfill all your zombies needs. Yes, there are tons of others that are better or worse, but these are our faves that should be seen at least once.
