Review – Doctor Who: The Ninth Doctor #1

The Ninth Doctor is back with a brand-new miniseries: Weapons of Past Destruction!

Leaving World War II behind, The Ninth Doctor, Rose and Captain Jack discover that Time Lord technology, lost in the wake of the Time War, is being sold on the intergalactic black market.

Now the threat of a new temporal war brews on the horizon. Can the Doctor stop history repeating itself?

As a member of Team Nine myself, I was delighted to hear that the Ninth Doctor was getting a 5-part comic series from Titan Comics, and I very much enjoyed the first issue. The writing by Cavan Scott is fun, with a lot of the quippy lines and clever asides you’d expect when it’s Nine, Rose, and Captain Jack getting into trouble.

The art by Blair Shedd is also fun. It’s always a little disconcerting to see “real” people transformed into drawn images in a comic, but I think Shedd is doing a nice job of balancing the need to make the characters recognizable, and the need to not make them look over-rendered and creepy. One or two smiles looked a little stiff, but overall I enjoyed the art.

And the cover by fan-favorite Alice X. Zhang is (…you knew I had to say it…) fantastic.
