SDCC 2015 – So many panels, so little time

Once again it’s a nerd’s favorite problem: how to fit in all the San Diego Comic-Con panels you want to see and still have time to get cosplay photos, buy decorations for your personal Starbase, and maybe remember to eat something.

The following panels are a teeny percentage of the ones I thought looked cool. (The full schedule is here.) Some of them have time conflicts, so I’ll either have to make a decision, or race from one to the other as fast as Security will let me go. I’ve got my running shoes, someone distract the guards…

Amazon: Hand of God

Amazon will introduce the Comic-Con audience to Hand of God; a one-hour drama series that stars Golden Globe winner Ron Perlman in his first lead television role since Sons of Anarchy, as the honorable justice Pernell Harris. The series centers on Harris, a powerful and corrupt judge who comes apart at the seams in the aftermath of a family tragedy. Stricken by grief, and in the midst of a mental and emotional breakdown, he experiences what he believes to be a religious epiphany. Compelled by forces he can’t understand, he sets out to get vengeance for the heinous crime that ultimately caused his only child to attempt suicide. Joining Perlman will be series creator Ben Watkins (Burn Notice), Garret Dilahunt (Justified), Andre Royo (Happyish), Alona Tal (Supernatural), Julian Morris (Pretty Little Liars), Emayatzy Corinealdi (Criminal Minds), and Elizabeth McLaughlin (Betrayal).
Thursday July 9, 2015 10:00am – 11:00am
Room 6A

You had me at “Ron Perlman” and convinced me at “get vengeance for the heinous crime…”

Spotlight on Jill Thompson

Comic-Con special guest and Eisner Award-winning comics creator Jill Thompson will be doing a live painting demonstration and Q&A. See how Jill paints a comics page using real watercolor paint and actual paper. It’s unique and it’s vibrant! The Q&A is totally improvised and all questions are welcome. There will be stories and prizes!
Thursday July 9, 2015 10:30am – 11:30am
Room 4

19 years later I still have the poster an ex gave me of Jill Thompson’s Sandman “Brief Lives” poster, and if that doesn’t say “fangirl” I don’t know what does. (It does not say anything about the ex. Sorry dude. Thanks for the poster!)

Transformers Generations: More Than Meets the Eye

Come see what the Transformers characters are up to as you are entertained with sneak peeks of the all new Activision video game trailers, IDW comic prints, and other special surprises. Then get your collector action on as you get an exclusive glimpse at the latest and greatest Transformers generations combiner wars toys that have yet to hit toy shelves. The Transformers team members will also host a Q&A session to answer your burning questions.
Thursday July 9, 2015 11:00am – 12:00pm
Room 25ABC

If it has “Transformers” and “IDW” in the same description I’m going to like it.

The Hunger Games: Mockingjay Part 2

Lionsgate presents an exclusive first look at one of the studio’s highly anticipated films coming to theaters this fall. Get a sneak peek into the powerful final chapter of the epic The Hunger Games film franchise. Attendees will be shown exclusive, never-before-seen footage from Mockingjay: Part 2 and treated to a cast and filmmaker Q&A session revealing details on the big-screen finale.
Thursday July 9, 2015 12:00pm – 1:15pm
Hall H

I might actually brave the Hall H line for this one. I’d enjoyed the second book in the Hunger Games series, but I really liked the movie better. I’m hoping the final movie in the series does the same; the book did not leave me happy.

Spotlight on Jim Lee

“What kind of pencil do you use?” Find out the answer to that ever-popular question and more as Comic-Con special guest and DC Entertainment co-publisher Jim Lee (Superman Unchained, Justice League, Batman) sketches live on stage and answers your life-long comic book questions in this fun and interactive panel.
Thursday July 9, 2015 12:45pm – 1:45pm
Room 6DE

I’ve been a sucker for anything Jim Lee-related since the X-Men reboot in the 90s.

Trailer Park

See the latest and greatest trailers with all of your pop culture-loving friends here on the big screen at Comic-Con.
Thursday July 9, 2015 1:30pm – 2:00pm
Hall H

The Trailer Parks at Comic-Con and WonderCon are my favorite; a chance to kick back and watch one awesome trailer after another. Though, at this last WonderCon they showed the first Fantastic Four trailer, and it was followed by total silence and then one audience member yelling an unenthusiastic “Boo.” That’s worth your time right there.

Spotlight on Skottie Young

Learn everything you ever wanted to know about Eisner Award-winning artist Skottie Young (I Hate Fairyland, Rocket Raccoon) and then some. Jim Viscardi (ComicBook.com, Let’s Talk Comics) grills the artist about his career, his new books, and where he get’s his inspiration from. Want to know which is his favorite young Marvel character to draw? Does he hate Fairyland? Find out here!
Thursday July 9, 2015 2:00pm – 3:00pm
Room 28DE

As far as I’m concerned everything this man touches is gold. He’s doing 3/4ths of the variant covers for Marvel right now and I’d really like him to do ALL of them.

Doctor Who: BBC America’s Official Panel

Following his record-breaking first season as the Doctor, Peter Capaldi will make his first ever appearance at Comic-Con with stars Jenna Coleman (Clara Oswald) and Michelle Gomez (Missy), and lead writer and executive producer Steven Moffat. Doctor Who follows the adventures of the Doctor, the time traveler who will continue to journey through all of space and time in epic adventures in the new season premiering this fall. Capaldi’s first season delivered BBC America its highest rated season ever and is available now on all digital platforms.
Thursday July 9, 2015 2:15pm – 3:15pm
Hall H

The line for this one will definitely one of those “camp out in line and sleep on the ground all night” kind of things, but it’s Doctor Who: it might actually be worth it.

The One and Only IDW Artist Edition

Join Artist’s Editions editor Scott Dunbier as he leads you on a tour of these big and beautiful books! There will be several announcements, a surprise guest or two, and some good old-fashioned art talk.
Thursday July 9, 2015 3:30pm – 4:30pm
Room 4

If there’s even the slightest chance that “surprise guest” means Alex Milne or Livio Ramondelli, I really have to go.

Sherlock

Steven Moffat (co-creator, executive producer, and writer), Sue Vertue (executive producer) and Rupert Graves (actor, DI Greg Lestrade) discuss the latest adventures of Sherlock Holmes and his long-suffering faithful friend, Dr. John Watson. Sherlock will return to PBS Masterpiece in a forthcoming special.
Thursday July 9, 2015 3:45pm – 4:45pm
Ballroom 20

It’s going to be SO LONG until we get another season of Sherlock, I will take any content I can get. Plus I could listen to Moffat talk all day.

Hall H and Ballroom 20 Thursday Playback Free Play

Didn’t get into Hall H or Ballroom 20 today? We feel your pain! On hand to kick off the panel will be the assistant to the director of programming for Comic-Con, Tommy Goldbach, in this two-and-half-hour block that rebroadcasts some of the day’s popular panels from those two giant rooms. Best of all, those in attendance will get to vote in a show of applause on what they want to see. It’s democracy at its finest, and it’s a second and maybe even a third chance to see these panels. (Please note: these playbacks will include only the panel discussions. None of the film clips or footage shown at the live events will be shown here.)
Thursday July 9, 2015 6:30pm – 9:00pm
The Playback Room, Omni Hotel, 4th Floor Ballroom

One of many chances I’ll have to see the content that I was too much of a line-wuss to see.

Spirited Away Screening

Hayao Miyazaki’s Spirited Away has captured the hearts of viewers all over the world. Join Her Universe and Hot Topic for Studio Ghibli trivia, prizes and a special screening of the beloved film, hosted by Her Universe founder Ashley Eckstein.

Marvel: Secret Wars

The Secret Wars rage on! And the architect of Marvel’s universe-destroying event, Jonathan Hickman himself, is on hand to answer your Secret Wars questions! He will be joined by executive editor Tom Brevoort and writer Sam Humphries (Planet Hulk). Prepare for a tour of Battleworld and some of its most unique and dangerous territories!
Friday July 10, 2015 10:00am – 11:00am
Room 6DE

Not kidding, I have loved EVERY SINGLE ONE of the Secret Wars books I’ve read, Marvel’s doing everything right with this event. And since I can’t afford to buy ALL the books, I want the chance to see as much of Battleworld as I possibly can.

Spotlight on Luis Royo

Luis Royo (fantasy illustrator, The Ice Dragon, Malefic Time) presents his new series of fantasy illustration books Malefic Time, followed by a Q&A session.
Friday July 10, 2015 10:00am – 11:00am
Room 29AB

It’s Luis Royo. I’ve actually bought a PlayBoy, in an actual brick and mortar store, just because it had a story by him. That’s how awesome his art is.

Lucifer Pilot Screening and Q&A

Lucifer is the story of the original fallen angel. Bored and unhappy as the Lord of Hell, Lucifer Morningstar has resigned his throne and retired to the City of Angels, where he owns an upscale piano bar called Lux. When a beautiful pop star is murdered, for the first time in roughly 10 billion years, he feels something awaken deep within him. Is he actually capable of feelings for a human being? The very thought disturbs him. The murder attracts the attention of LAPD homicide detective Chloe Dancer, who finds herself both repulsed and fascinated by Lucifer. At the same time, God’s emissary, the angel Amenadiel, has been sent to Los Angeles to convince Lucifer to return to Hell. But with the City of Angels at his feet and a newfound purpose, Lucifer’s having too much fun to go back now. Sexy, dark and irreverent, Lucifer makes its Comic-Con debut with a screening of the complete pilot episode, followed by a Q&A with series stars and producers. From Jerry Bruckheimer Television and Aggressive Mediocrity in association with Warner Bros. Television, and based on characters created by Neil Gaiman, Sam Kieth, and Mike Dringenberg for DC Entertainment’s Vertigo imprint, Lucifer premieres Midseason on FOX.
Friday July 10, 2015 11:30am – 12:30pm
Room 6BCF

I’m a fan of anything related to Neil Gaiman, and I loved the Lucifer graphic novels. I don’t want to believe that they’re ruining the series by turning it into another police procedural. I want to give it the chance it deserves. If they let me down, I will hold Neil Gaiman completely blameless. And I will burn FOX logos in effigy.

Star Wars Goes Steampunk

From Admiral Ackbar to Master Yoda, enjoy a lively discussion and slideshow on how your favorite Star Wars characters and designs have been re-engineered in Steampunk style. Steampunk artist and Star Wars fan, Brian Kesinger (artist/writer Walking Your Octopus) and fellow Southern California Star Wars Steampunks will discuss what it takes to create Steampunk concepts based on traditional designs until the art becomes cosplay reality. Panelists include Shawn “Obi-Shawn” Crosby, Rebecca “Lady Fett” Eusey, and Alex “Dapper Fett” Vargas. Moderated by Anastasia Hunter (chair, Gaslight Gathering Steampunk Convention).
Friday July 10, 2015 12:00pm – 1:00pm
Room 14A

Yes okay, the description’s great, but I was already plugging this into my calendar at “Star Wars” and “Steampunk.”

AMC’s The Walking Dead

Andrew Lincoln, Norman Reedus, Steven Yeun, Lauren Cohan, Danai Gurira, Melissa McBride, Chandler Riggs, Sonequa Martin-Green, Michael Cudlitz, and Lennie James join executive producer and showrunner Scott M. Gimple, executive producer Gale Anne Hurd, executive producer Dave Alpert, and special effects makeup supervisor and executive producer Greg Nicotero in a panel moderated by Chris Hardwick (The Nerdist, Talking Dead). Join the panelists for a Q&A session and an official sneak preview of Season 6.
Friday July 10, 2015 12:00pm – 1:00pm
Hall H

Another “sleep on the ground in line” kind of panel. But last year Norman Reedus happened to walk right past me. I would’ve jumped up and tackled him if I could’ve made my legs work. I doubt I’ll be that lucky two years in a row, so maybe I’d better brave the line if I want to see him that much. (Norman: I promise I won’t tackle you. Your security looks tough and your girlfriend is awesome.)

Friday Playback Room Block #2

The Playback Room will be showing the following panel presentations from either or both Hall H and Ballroom 20: AMC’s The Walking Dead, AMC’s Fear the Walking Dead, and The 100 Special Video Presentation and Q&A. Friday July 10, 2015 12:30pm – 3:00pm

…or if I don’t brave the line to see Norman Reedus, I can see him here.

Women of Transformers

From Windblade and Arcee to Strongarm and the brand-new Combiner making her debut at SDCC, female Transformers characters have finally gotten their due; but behind the page and in fandom, even bigger changes have been happening. Friday July 10, 2015 1:30pm – 2:30pm
Room 8

It’s not just that “IDW” and “Transformers” combination that’s getting me, but every single woman listed in this panel is knocking it out of the park when it comes to creating Transformers stories that I love.

The Originals will be returning for more sexy, supernatural intrigue, romance, alliances, and bloodshed in New Orleans this fall. The India Inkblot Test: Why Comics Are Good for Mental Health, and Mental Health is Good for Comics

As public awareness of mental health issues increases and the stigma associated with mental disorders and their treatment recedes, will mental health advocacy in comic books become more widely embraced? As with efforts to better represent women in comics have paid off in terms of new readers, can more accurate portrayals of mental disorders unlock a new demographic? Forensic psychiatrists H. Eric Bender, M.D. and Praveen R. Kambam, M.D. (Broadcast Thought) discuss why accurate mental health depictions matter and how less stigmatizing and more creative representations can benefit both patients and publishers alike. Gail Simone (Batgirl, Red Sonja) will talk about her efforts to accurately represent people with mental disorders and her consultation with clinical psychologist Andrea Letamendi, Ph.D. (Under the Mask,The Arkham Sessions) on the depiction of posttraumatic stress disorder and its treatment in DC Comics’ Batgirl. Clinical psychologist Janina Scarlet, Ph.D. (Superhero Therapy) will share moving stories of patients inspired by accurate comic book depictions of mental disorders in their recovery from mental illnesses. Pozios, M.D. (Broadcast Thought) will discuss his short story about a stigmatized superhero with bipolar disorder, Aura, published in RISE: Comics Against Bullying from Northwest Press. Attorney Jeff Trexler (The Beat, The Comics Journal) will moderate, contextualizing the changing landscape of mental health depictions in comics with the complicated history between comic books and mental health.
Saturday July 11, 2015 11:00am – 12:00pm
Room 25ABC

I’ve been lucky enough to talk with Janina Scarlet in person, and I would love to see her talk on this subject. Gail Simone is just icing on the cake.

Did I miss your favorite panel? Let me know! Leave a comment and tell me what awesomeness I should be attending.
