Review – Transformers Windblade #6

Beast War! On Eukaris, the colonists are more than just robots in disguise—they’re a new breeds of Transformers. But while Windblade and Starscream struggle to gain allies on a new world, an ancient power seeks to force them off the planet.

Beast Wars fans rejoice, as the lost Titan Colony of Eukaris finally meets the Cybertronians. Click the jump for preview pages and a review of Transformers Windblade #6!

Once again written by Mairghread Scott and illustrated by Corin Howell, the continuing story of Windblade is the most straightforward of IDW’s Transformers series: both Windblade and Starscream are officially trying to recruit the lost Titan Colonies to align with Cybertron, and unofficially trying to make sure neither of them gains too much power. Windblade got a win last issue by recruiting Velocitron, but while her back was turned Starscream recruited the Devisens, a Lost Colony that circles a binary star, and all of their sparks are formed as twins.

(Side note, you can be sure that Kathryn and I over on the Binary System Podcast are going to have a lot to talk about with that one.)

“Straightforward” doesn’t mean “boring” though. The various worlds we’ve been seeing are all interesting, but this issue saw the return of the Beast Wars characters, and old fans of the series and newcomers to the characters should enjoy this story.

The art is fun as always, with a very dynamic, animated style. Howell does a great job with expressions, Starscream’s sneer being my favorite. (I also got a kick out of Airazor’s head crest feathers springing up with a “poof” when she got mad.)

As for the Beast Wars characters themselves, I’m not really qualified to judge how they look or act: I never watched the series (I know, you’re horrified. I was just a G1 fan to the core.) I’d love to hear from Beast Wars fans; what did you think of the art and story? Does it respect the original series? Did everyone act pretty true to form? Chime in at the comments!
