Look, I already know what you’re going to have to say, so you don’t have to say it. Crisis Core IS NOT a retro game. In fact, the game was released in 2007 in Japan and 2008 here in the US, so it isn’t even borderline retro. However, following my FFVII review, my plan was to take a crack at possibly the most polarizing of Final Fantasy games, Final Fantasy VIII. Unfortunately, Final Fantasy VII left me wanting more, possibly due to the game being so overhyped and so I decided to break out my copy of Crisis Core -Final Fantasy VII-, which I had put on hold after losing my data when my old PSP was stolen. And, finally having Final Fantasy VII under my belt, I felt it was finally time to go through it once more and finish what I started. So, consider this a supplement to my Final Fantasy VII review as I delve further into the mythology of the world of Final Fantasy VII.

In the past, Macs have definitely gotten the shaft from game developers, opting to program their games for Windows instead, leaving Mac users out in the cold. But recently, with the ability for Mac users to run Windows through Boot Camp, that has slowly been changed. And now, it seems as game developer Valve is ready to make an announcement that Mac enthusiasts have been waiting for.

Given that I’m a big fan of plot heavy video games, it probably comes as no surprise that I’m a fan of the Final Fantasy series. After all, RPGs in general tend to be all about the story and the Final Fantasy series, along with The Legend of Zelda, is probably one of the most widely known RPG series, thanks in part to Squaresoft’s (now Square Enix) Final Fantasy VII for the Sony PlayStation. In fact, prior to Final Fantasy VII, the series had not yet hit the mainstream scene on an international scale. While definitely a popular series in Japan, North America had only seen a few glimpses of the series in the form of Final Fantasy I, IV, and VI (II, III, and V were not released outside of Japan) and Europe hadn’t even seen a Final Fantasy release until Final Fantasy VII.

*Cue Final Fantasy Victory Theme*
That’s right, folks. The first two Final Fantasy games are now available for the iPhone (and iPod touch as well). Sure, we’ve had remakes of the games for the Game Boy Advance and PlayStation Portable, but iPhone gamers out there that didn’t bother with either system can now bask in glory that is Final Fantasy. Priced at $9 piece, the games come with the special dungeons that have been included since the GBA rereleases. So for all of you that have always wanted to see what all the rage is about or just want to go back and experience the games all over again, what are you waiting for?

I tend to give Nintendo a lot of crap about their focus on child and family-friendly gaming. While there’s nothing wrong with appealing to kids, I personally believe Nintendo should have matured along with their audience. Still, even I have to give them credit when they do something right. And trust me, Super Mario Galaxy 2 is definitely something that Nintendo seems to be doing right.
The original Galaxy was a great game and Galaxy 2 is shaping up to be an excellent sequel. Though the oft-ignored Luigi is nowhere to be seen in the new trailer, as is standard in the 3D Mario games, another familiar green character is making a comeback. That’s right. Yoshi is back in action, aiding Mario as usual, a feature that was missing in the original Mario Galaxy. There’s just something awesome about riding around on that little green dinosaur. Now let’s just hope Galaxy 2 ramps up the difficulty, given how disappointingly easy the original was.
Super Mario Galaxy 2 launches on May 23rd for the Wii. Let’s hope it doesn’t disappoint.

Late last month, Capcom announced that one of its fan favorite Game Boy Advance series, Mega Man ZERO would be repackaged and rereleased for the Nintendo DS, due for release this summer. The ZERO series, taking place about 100 years following the end of the X series, features X’s partner Zero as the main playable character, awakening in a dystopian future under the control of a brutal dictatorship after having been in hibernation for over a century. After being revived by a human scientist named Ciel, Zero learns that a reploid by the name of Master X and ruler of the government of Neo Arcadia has branded innocent reploids as Mavericks, ordering their extermination. Learning from Ciel that Master X is the same X that fought alongside him a century before, Zero embarks on a mission to stop his former friend.
Released in 2002, production of the series began after the release of Mega Man X5, which was intended by series creator Keiji Inafune to be the final entry in the X series, leading into the events of Mega Man ZERO. While the X series continued, ZERO went on to become a four-part series, enjoying its success on the Game Boy Advance and considered to be some of the hardest games in the entirety of the Mega Man series. While no definite release date has been given for the collection, Capcom has announced a Summer 2010 release. Not much is known about any special features the collection may contain, but in the meantime, enjoy these screens, courtesy of Capcom.

When you think side-scrolling shooters, it’s hard not to think of Mega Man, the little blue robot whose NES offerings, especially the earlier entries were notorious for their difficulty. And even after the SNES hit the market, Capcom continued releasing new entries on the NES, a practice that went on for about 3 years before Capcom finally felt ready to take the series into the 16-bit age. However, when the time finally came for the series to make its grand debut on the SNES, rather than be greeted by the familiar Blue Bomber, Capcom introduced us to Mega Man X, his slightly more mature and edgier counterpart.

Have you wanted an actual World of Warcraft pet that wasn’t digital? One that you can hold in your hands? Well now you can…sort of. Though actual, real-life WoW pets are out of the question, unfortunately due to the fact that something like that is a complete impossibility, for now at least, Blizzard is doing the next best thing: releasing plushies of their upcoming WoW pets, a Wind Rider Cub and a Griffon Hatchling.
The plushies, being released on February 22nd, come bundled with a virtual pet code, which grants players an in-game code for that particular pet. The two plushies themselves look, dare I say it, adorable and I think many WoW fans are gonna be happy to get their hands on them, at least those that are willing to spend the money for them. There’s doesn’t appear to be a set price, though Blizzard’s last two pets, the Lil’ K.T. and the Pandaren Monk were priced at $10, so one can assume that pet codes bundled with plushies are going to be a bit more expensive than that. But only time will tell. For those WoW players that love cute things, you may want to start saving up some money if you haven’t already.

It’s a debate we hear all the time. The experienced old-timer talking about how they did it in their day and how things were so much better “back then”. Even when it comes to video games, there are people who prefer the way things were back in the old blocky, 2D days.
