Level Up: Why I am Doing This.

Level Up: Why I am Doing This.

I made something. You should go buy it. Let me tell you why.  Many ask me what I plan to do with the money. I want to make my dreams happen, travel to more places, try some new foods, not worry about bills, but — most importantly — I want to make the world more fantastic.

I could build an empire of nerdy and geeky pillows, blankets, and other things I wish to make for profit. (This is kinda the point of business.) I want to go one step farther: I want to build fantastic products that give people warm fuzzies on the outside and the inside. Charity work has always been important to me; I’ve been part of a giving club from the time I have had a real first pay check to now. I think that we need to give; this world isn’t limited to what we need and want, but what we can give and create.

Something I learned from Day[9]

Something I learned from Day[9]

If you are a hardcore or semi-hardcore (Where is the line?) player of Starcraft then you might know the name of Day[9]. Day[9] was introduced to me as a dynamic commentator of StarCraft mixing equal parts comedy and strategic insight. If there was a nerd that I wanted to be my CO it might be Day[9]. If you don’t know him go to his YouTube channel and watch any videos and get a feel for his style. He goes though a number of different dailies from commenting games of professionals with APM that is easily 25 times greater than mine to Newbie Tuesdays which is for the bubkins like me who needs the assistance to figure out build orders and to be reminded that you should always build probes and pylons.

By and Far though my favorite day is Funday Monday, it is the day where he puts ridiculous matches on the web for us all to be confused by and laugh that the insanity actually worked out for the victors. I love the promotion of pure fun in a game where people can get really worked up over if something goes wrong. Namely my favorite casts of his are the Team Mono-battles. The rules are simple at the beginning of the match you must declare one type of fighting unit and you can only build THAT unit for the composition of your army, and you must declare this to all the players. After that you hope that through teamwork, grit, and luck that you can beat the opposite army. Here are somethings I noticed about every match that I have seen and some really cool things that flow from that wellspring. Selecting, Glee, Fear, Focus, Outcome.

Level Up: Let’s talk about Sex

Level Up: Let’s talk about Sex

Perked your little ears up now didn’t I? I’ve been thinking a lot about sex recently, mostly because I am a male and that is mostly what we think about. I had other reasons for thinking about sex not just from a reproductive or carnal sense, but from a intellectual level. Hot right? I was sitting in thinking about how I felt about the philosophy of sex. Note: That line gets you no where at the bar. Sure we all want it, but is sex a distraction like they say? Is it a nice but aside from procreation a needed part of life? And what about us geeks that are usually thought of to not be very sexual creatures? I wouldn’t say I have the solutions like Dr. Ruth, but I feel that after meditating on the issue for most of my life I should be able to articulate some picture of how I feel on the issue.

Level Up: A Lesson in Failing

Level Up: A Lesson in Failing

Veteran. Hard Core. Legendary. Epic.

These are all difficulties that we ratchet up to challenge ourselves in game, but in real life we wuss out to the challenge of increasing the chance of failure. We wuss out hard. Failure will happen to you just like death and taxes. I know most self-help gurus won’t tell you that. They’d rather puff you up with kind words and affirmations.

These are vital to staying sane and positive in this world. Don’t get me wrong; I love to affirm people. But we spend a lot of time and energy safeguarding ourselves against that possibility we live rather mundane lives. We become content with plateauing at mediocrity and never rise from it, driven by the interplay of two concerns: Fear and Comfort.

Time is On My Side!

Time is On My Side!

Most people feel that time is this celestial jerk that is bearing down on them stomping out any fun that they have with a giant Galactus foot keeping your demise punctual and painful. We are always racing against time, but there are some plusses to having a time limit that we take for granted. I would like to take the time as an advocate for the perceived opposition and give time a voice; let’s talk about the strengths that come from the clock.

Justin’s Upcoming Interview with Radio KOL

Justin’s Upcoming Interview with Radio KOL

If you have ever seen or heard of the greatest game ever (Kingdom Of Loathing), then an adventurer are you! If you aren’t aware, then go make yourself a character; it’s free and super-duper fun. Trust me: I have played this game for over six years.

While playing, I listen to Radio KOL as well. Radio KOL is a volunteer-based radio station of fantastic geeky folks that take time out of their schedules to give listeners entertainment via the internet. Most of the time, this means great blocks of music, a little bit of, and sometimes a few NSFW stories. I have recently been asked to do an interview for the listeners of KOL on DJ Haplo’s show on March 17th between 8-10 PM ET with my Level Up philosophy.

I invite you to tune in next Thursday, and, if you aren’t a player, to join and send in your questions to me (Superbeefy123) on that Thursday! I also will have a very special announcement to make then that few will be expecting.  Check it out!

Geek Style: The Thesis

Geek Style: The Thesis

It’s an early geeky morning, which roughly means noon, or one-ish in the afternoon. You stumble over to your closet, after no shower, and throw on…the Doctor Who t-shirt sounds good with…the pants you wore yesterday. Good to go.

This is a problem we as a culture need to counteract. I have no problem with Doctor Who tee-shirts or pants that you had on yesterday (they just feel better, right?).  The problem is when that shirt is two sizes too big, and the pants are wrinkly, or you just plain don’t match. It perpetuates the stereotype that all geeks are slovenly and socially inept.

But it’s true: most geeks and gamers today don’t know how to dress themselves.

Level Up: V-Day Blues.

While Blue Valentine may be an Oscar-nominated movie, it is a real life occurance for most of us geeks. We would all like to sit back and be told that it doesn’t really matter if you have a significant other or not on a day like Valentine’s. Frankly, it doesn’t help. Maybe, some honest truth will. If you are in a happy relationship, this article isn’t for you. Lonely people read on.

Hey Justin,

I have a date coming up for Valentine’s Day. It’s totally chill, we are just hanging out and watching a movie or two at my place. Which movies should I pick to show off my geekness and keep her interested? What food should I make? Beer? Wear? Help.
