Binary System Podcast #36 – Alice Isn’t Dead Chapter 5: Signs and Wonders

On this week’s episode we’re discussing Captain America: Civil War (don’t worry, no spoilers,) Daredevil (nope, no spoilers here either,) High-Rise (still no spoilers) and recap the latest episode of Alice Isn’t Dead. (Lots of spoilers there.)

Along the way we get into the finer points of when you should and should not go back to see if that’s really a dead body over there…

Review – Captain America: Civil War

I just got back from Captain America: Civil War and wanted to write a review while it was still fresh in my brain. I really liked it, and I definitely thought it was worth the wait.

That’s it. Goodnight everybody!

Kidding. It’d be a pretty boring review if I didn’t have at least a couple minor quibbles. But honestly, not as many quibbles as I thought I’d have: this one was hyped half to death, and it stood up to the hype better than I expected.

Review: Spectrum #0 from Alan Tudyk and Nathan Fillion

On Free Comic Book Day (Saturday May 7!) we’ll finally get to see Spectrum. Not a preview or a handful of pages, but a full-length issue from writers Alan Tudyk and PJ Haarsma and artist Sarah Stone, the artist of Transformers: Windblade, so I was throwing my money at them as soon as I heard that last tidbit. Except I don’t have to throw money, because it’s free. See below for the review!

Binary System Podcast #33 – WTNV #86 “Standing and Breathing”

In this week’s Night Vale episode we got to see a lot more of these Strangers that aren’t doing much, except standing there…and breathing… andthensuddenlyappearingrightnexttoyouwithoutmoving YIPE!

After that we talked about what we’re catching up on (Daredevil, House of Cards, and Hannibal) and then drop all the spoilers on Crimson Peak because Elizabeth finally watched it and we had to talk about how amazingly pretty it is. And don’t worry, we don’t make one single mention of Tom Hiddleston’s butt. Except here. Sorry. (Not sorry.)

Review – Court of the Dead: The Chronicle of the Underworld

This dark, sprawling realm is rife with unimaginable creatures, feral beauties and dazzling temptations the likes of which you have never seen.
Luckily, you have a guidebook…

I got lucky with this review: I wanted to take a look at the upcoming Court of the Dead: The Chronicle of the Underworld just because I liked the cover and the description, and because I thought it was one of those large, hardback art books you see like Dragonology or Egyptology: big on pictures and small on story, but very pretty to look at.

I was a little off the mark with the Dragonology comparison.

I had no idea this was the story behind the elaborate displays I’ve seen at the Sideshow Collectibles booth at San Diego Comic-Con and WonderCon, with the otherworldly figures and prints. I love the Death’s Siren piece and the Shepherd of Souls print, and I’ve always meant to find out what they were all about, but kept forgetting.

So this is a sign from somewhere that it’s time to read up on it. That’s disturbing and awesome at the same time.

Review: I Hate Fairyland – Volume One

Review: I Hate Fairyland – Volume One

“Over the top” doesn’t begin to cover it.

The first volume of Skottie Young’s I Hate Fairyland isn’t some sweet story in a land of spun-sugar towers and graceful unicorns, or the otherworldly beauty of Oz. It isn’t even the cute cartoon mayhem of his Little X-Men, Little Avengers issues.

Fairyland is violent and goofy and gross, as wacky a mess as you could ever want. Remember Toon Town in Who Framed Roger Rabbit? It’s like that, only much much worse.

Review and Preview: Transformers – More Than Meets the Eye #51

“If you want to break someone — mentally, physically, emotionally — wait until they’re happy. Let them live and love and thrive. Once they recognize the value of a life well lived… THAT’S when you move in for the kill. Because you can’t take anything from someone who has nothing to lose.” –Tarn

The Decepticon Justice Division has the crew of the Lost Light pinned down (except for the crew back on the shop who are busy staging a mutiny) and Megatron’s acting very strange. Click the jump for preview pages and a review of Transformers: More Than Meets the Eye #51.
