[E3 2013] Square Enix Releases Battle Trailer for Final Fantasy XV

It’s no secret that the Final Fantasy name hasn’t been well-received in recent years. With polarizing titles such as Final Fantasy XIII and XIII-2, as well as the critical failure of Final Fantasy XIV‘s initial release, it would be easy to dismiss the franchise at this point. The lack of a stateside release of Final Fantasy Type-0 and rumors regarding the cancelation of the highly anticipated Final Fantasy Versus XIII haven’t really helped matters much either.

However, with the reveal that Versus XIII is now officially Final Fantasy XV, the Final Fantasy fan in me can’t help but get excited. In fact, after the stellar story trailer unveiled at Sony’s E3 Press Conference, the only thing that could possibly make things better would be a better look at the gameplay.

Square Enix has thankfully delivered.

[E3 2013] Konami Releases New Metal Gear Solid V: The Phantom Pain Trailer

Metal Gear Solid V‘s unveiling at the Game Developers Conference in March introduced gamers to the FOX Engine, Kojima Productions’ mind-blowing new gameplay engine. If there was something that got people talking more than the FOX Engine itself, it was the controversial decision to replace David Hayter as Naked Snake/Big Boss and speculation about who would replace the legendary Metal Gear icon.

Now, with the recent revelation that Keifer Sutherland will be taking over the role, it’s time to shift focus back to what’s important: the game itself. And there’s no better way to do that than with a new trailer.

Konami Unveils Metal Gear Solid V: The Phantom Pain at GDC

At last year’s PAX Prime, Metal Gear creator Hideo Kojima unveiled Metal Gear Solid: Ground Zeroes, an amazing tech demo that showed off Kojima Productions’ new FOX Engine.

A few months later, at the Spike TV Video Game Awards, Swedish game developer Moby Dick Studios unveiled a trailer for a supernatural thriller called The Phantom Pain. It wasn’t long, however, before speculation began that The Phantom Pain was really Metal Gear Solid V in disguise.

At GDC 2013, those suspicions were, in fact, confirmed.

[Review] Metal Gear Rising: Revengeance (PS3/X360)

[Review] Metal Gear Rising: Revengeance (PS3/X360)

Publisher: Konami Digital Entertainment
Developer: Platinum Games
Release Date: February 19, 2013
ESRB Rating: M
Pg! Score: 9

There was no shortage of skepticism when Kojima Productions handed off Metal Gear Solid: Rising to Platinum Games and rebranded it as Metal Gear Rising: Revengeance.  While not uncommon for publishers to outsource popular franchises after creative teams break up or to liven up a franchise that has stagnated – see Ninja Theory’s take on Capcom’s Devil May Cry and Silent Hill’s parade of hand-offs to various developers after Team Silent’s dissolution as examples – results have generally been mixed.

Knowing the design philosophy of Platinum Games’ prior titles, simply handing a story-heavy franchise over to the action-first, story-second studio might have meant bad news for Revengeance.  Fortunately, instead of a simple outsourcing, Revengeance is a full-blown collaboration between Platinum and Kojima Productions. This allowed the former to concentrate on fast-paced gameplay and the latter to handle the franchise’s trademark narrative style and cinematic tone, each playing to their strengths.

The result is beautiful to behold.
