Prelude to Millennium: Chapter 1.4 (Vivian Murphy to Thomas Raith)

I decided to include this response from Vivian (Thomas’ contact) before we get to Mycroft and the rest.  This letter pings as Thomas is talking to Mycroft; I’m going to play with time a little bit and see if it pays off narratively.  The next part will take place before this letter arrives and, hopefully it will make sense.  Anyway, enjoy.

Prelude to Millennium: Chapter 1.3 (Thomas Raith to Vivian Murphy)

Posting a new section of the RPG on game day itself is always exciting.  Nothing gets me more in the mood to table-top than novelizing a version of what’s already happened.  These guys (and gal) have helped tremendously in this process by being active storytellers themselves when they RP.  You’d think they’re all vets with the creative twists and turns (none of them outlandishly unbelievable either) that they conjure for their PCs.  Great, very rewarding, stuff.  Anyway, here’s 1.3:

Prelude to Millennium, Part I, Chapter 1.2 (Thomas Raith to Vivian Murphy)

Below is the second installment of Chapter 1.  Thomas is an increasingly enjoyable character to write; noir predicates itself on writing an analogy a second, especially in the mind of the detective.  Luckily, Taylor has played the part well during game and given me plenty to work with.  I can’t wait to introduce Mycroft next.  Just imagine Tony Stark and Bruce Wayne without the superhero counterparts.  There’s no world needing rescue (yet), and Mycroft is anything but bored.

Prelude to Millennium: Part I, Chapter 1.1 (The First Correspondence of Thomas Raith to Vivian Murphy, Re: The Coming Tempest)

I’m upholding my promise to novelize this game.  It’s too good not to.  And I owe all of that to the players.  So, before I begin, let me extend a hearty thanks to James, Taylor, John, JJ, and Savannah for giving me simultaneously the easiest and most difficult DM job I’ve ever had.  For those of you interested, our game is a home-brew hybrid of D&D 3.5 and 4th eds. with sprinklings of White Wolf-levels of roleplaying and storytelling.  The world is mostly steampunk with touches of D20 Modern thrown in for joy-joys.  So, if this snickersnacks in your bandersnatch, savor the following.

A Long Time Frothing: Writing and Emotional Responsibility for a DM

A Long Time Frothing: Writing and Emotional Responsibility for a DM

Brace yourselves.  I’ve got quite a bit to say, and most of it is rambling and smacks of “back in my day, we didn’t have feelings!”  Also: end-notes.  When you see this symbol (*), scroll to the bottom for some addendum that is neither funny nor pertinent.

So it’s been a hot minute.  And I only have myself to blame for not following my own advice that I dole out every morning to my students.  Write it out.  No matter how you feel, what time of day it is, nor what reasons you have to avoid it, write it out.  “I’m their teacher, though.  I don’t have to follow my own advice!” he exclaimed, snickering at the hot pokers in the fire while casually denying that his wife looks a little too much like mommy.  Rip.  Bleed.  Hubris.  Bottling up your perspectives on and reactions to life’s interminable downward spiral is irresponsible and damaging, no matter what level of emotional human you claim to be.

Mon Frere Update: Audio CD, Filming a Pilot, and New Shows!

For the past few weeks, the fellas (and ladies) of Mon Frere have been working hard to produce an audio CD and TV pilot.  Back in November, we ventured to Sanford, NC to record our Harry Potter-themed sketch show “Huffle Puffed!” with Future Ghosts frontman Aslan Freeman.  He graciously recorded (and is currently finishing) the CD for the promise of gas money and beer.  Do us a favor and hit up Future Ghosts‘ facebook page and check out their new video “Spotless” that’s currently tearing it up on YouTube.
