[BAotW] When Cats are Playing Keyboards, You Know Badassery is Afoot

In February of 2005, the world of the interwebs was forever changed.  Three former PayPal employees banded together to birth a beautiful internet love child. Internet-goers could watch clips of their favorite movies, creative vlogs and webseries, or a walrus playing a saxophone, all on one website.  In February of 2005, YouTube was born.

[BAotW] Silent Hill Roadtrip, Anyone?

Hey look! I’m not dead!

It’s vacation time. Where do you want to go?  If you’re thinking somewhere tropical, maybe you’d enjoy the Bahamas.  If somewhere quiet and full of nature is more your thing, you could try the mountains. If you enjoy walking through an endless see of falling ash and running from distorted monsters with no hope of ever returning home, then Silent Hill, West Virginia is the way to go. But really, what the hell kind of person would want to go to Silent Hill?

[BAotW] Boomsticks and the Like

I like chainsaws.  Do you like chainsaws?  You’d better, because chainsaws are awesome.  They saw through things, make creepy loud noises, and most importantly, they come to the aid of many in times of zombie-related need.  When you’re playing a survival zombie game, you don’t see a chainsaw lying on the ground and think, “Nah, I think I’ll use this frying pan instead.” Oh no, you grab that shit and start chopping away to your heart’s content, sending undead heads and limbs flying in every direction.  Now, what if instead of a hand, you had a chainsaw? Other than having the (trapped and terrified) ladies all over you, you would immediately be promoted to the rank of ultra-badass.  I sincerely hope that those of you who call yourself geeks know exactly who I am talking about.

[BAotW] Is It the Nineteenth Yet?

Today is October the fourteenth. In exactly five days, my social life will be over. Why, you ask? Three words: Fallout New Vegas.  I will be waiting anxiously the Monday night beforehand, and when the clock strikes midnight and I grab my Collector’s edition copy, I will drive back to my apartment and no one will hear from me for several days.  Why?  Because Fallout 3 was and still is my favorite Xbox 360 game to date, and I have been as giddy as a little schoolgirl about the release of the newest Fallout. I killed somewhere in the ballpark of two hundred hours on Fallout 3, and I plan to kill even more with New Vegas.  So in honor of the game that will destroy my social life for the next week, Fallout 3′s Vault Dweller has earned a spot as this week’s Badass of the Week.

Oh, You Like Halo: Reach Too?

Oh, You Like Halo: Reach Too?

If you have never heard of Egoraptor or the Metal Gear Awesome series on Newgrounds, I pity you.  Actually, I don’t pity you. I DO, however, force you to go watch it right now.  Whether you’ve seen the series or not, you will thank me after you watch Egoraptor’s latest animated cartoon.  Halo: Reach has been out for only a few weeks, but the hype about the game has been immense. IMMENSELY immense.  So to commemorate the enthusiasm about the newest Halo game, Egoraptor has posted his most recent cartoon titled, “Awesome Reach.” Watch the video HERE on Newgrounds.  If you’ve never seen the Metal Gear Awesome series (shame on you if you haven’t) or any of Egoraptor’s ingenious and hilarious cartoons, check them out here.

Check out the video after the break.  Slight warning: There’s language. A lot of it. And dick jokes. The videos might not be totally SFW, unless your boss likes that kind of thing. In that case, who cares? Watch away!

[BAotW] Canis Canem Edit

This week I’ve got a blast-from-the-sort-of-but-not-really-past.  2006.  That’s technically the past, right? Right?!  Oh well.  A lot of you remember a brilliantly entertaining sandbox game by Rockstar (no, not Red Dead Redemption) that first came out for the PS2 several years back, and then was revamped and released onto the Xbox 360, Wii, and PC in 2008.  The game Bully was unlike any game I had previously played.  Though I have played through my share of sandbox games, this one was different.  Bully let me live out my dreams of beating students up, learning fighting moves from hobos, and making friends with greasers. [BAotW] Rodents Can Be Badass Too

As I sat in the kitchen this morning and watched my six-month-old nephew blow snot bubbles, I tried to think of a good candidate for this week’s Badass of the Week.  I attempted to reflect on games I’ve played recently, movies I’ve watched, and even people in pop culture that were somewhat interesting.  As I looked over at my nephew, I noticed his oatmeal-covered bib was embroidered with a pattern of Mickey Mouse ears. Now, most people wouldn’t see Mickey on a baby’s teething bib and think “Oh damn, Mickey’s such a badass”, but with the Wii title Epic Mickey coming out in late November, and his numerous appearances in Kingdom Hearts: Birth by Sleep, Mickey has more than earned his spot as a Badass of the Week.

Tentacles? Fire? Ghosts? What?!

Tentacles? Fire? Ghosts? What?!

American McGee’s Alice was, is, and will continue to be one of my favorite PC games of all time.  So, obviously, when EA confirmed a few months ago that there would be a sequel, I nearly wet myself with excitement.  American McGee has been teaming up with EA and Spicy Horse to create this sequel set ten years after the original took place.  Alice is even more demented and insane (I don’t know HOW), and the game offers the same eerie, disturbing feel that the first one displayed.  McGee said at the EA conference a few months back that they would be releasing three teaser trailers for fans.  The first one was shown right after his speech at the conference, and the second one was released just a few days ago at Tokyo Game Show, and is currently circulating the internet.  Go past the break to check out the second official teaser trailer for EA and Spicy Horse’s Alice: Madness Returns, due for release in 2011. If you didn’t catch the first teaser, check it out in my BAotW article on American McGee’s Alice here. (Shameless self-promotion, what?)

[BAotW @ DragonCon 2010] So…Many…Cosplayers…

So, first things first- I am no cosplayer.  I am much too lazy to put together a costume, let alone take the time to make it look even acceptable.  So when I go to conventions and see the time and effort others put into their costumes, I am completely amazed.  That takes serious creativity and non-laziness which I fail to have.  But this past weekend at DragonCon I noticed a few certain cosplayers who went past the standard of costuming and made their outfits even better than the already incredible crowd. And I have to admit, the results were pretty freaking badass.

[BAotW] A Few Mini-BAs to Tide You Over

Hello there children, do you know what day it is?  Why, it’s “Shauna-Gets-To-Be-A-Slacker” Day! So instead of the regular one-badass-per-article standard that I’ve had each week, I’ve decided to do a couple mini-BAotWs just for today. “Why are you so lazy Shauna?” you might ask.  It’s because tomorrow James and I are driving down to Atlanta to meet Bob (aka Dr. DM) to get full media coverage of Dragon*con for all you readers.  We’ll have a TON of new and hopefully breaking news stories and interviews for you while we’re down there, and even more once we get back.  So I have a somewhat legitimate excuse to slack off. HA. Look past the break for a few badasses of the video game world, the film world, and the interweb world. Read On
