Top Picks in Comics for 5/4/11

Welcome back my dear comic book lovers!  I’m back again to bring you my review in last week’s new comic releases.  My stack was a little light this week so I took the opportunity to try out some new books that had caught my eye. iZombie and Sweet Tooth started new story arcs last week so in my eternal search for the perfect pull list I gave these books a shot.  It’s all about trying new things, my friends.

And speaking of new be sure to check out the newest episode of Comic Issues. The whole gang had a meet up where some local fans came by to watch Thor together and then they got to be the very first Comic Issues Live Audience!  It was a lot of fun and new friends were made. Keep your eye out for our next meet up for Green Lantern when it comes out.

Now let’s talk some comic books! And watch out for spoilers.

Thor

Thor

I am certain no two people in the theatre were more ignorant of the Marvel comic title Thor than my companion and I. We gamely let the film unfold before us with zero preconceptions and (to be honest) pretty low expectations. The fans around is seemed to feel pretty good about it as a whole, and we both found it entertaining and pretty well self-contained.

The story takes place in two worlds: ours, and the far-off realm of Asgard, where the personages of Thor (Chris Hemsworth(, Odin (Anthony Hopkins), Loki (Tom Hiddleston), Frigga (Rene Russo), and Heimdall (Idris Elba) live. The presence of these space gods in our Norse folklore is explained as long-ago visits to Earth where their advanced science seemed magical. Naturally, back in New Mexico, we have Stellan SkarsgÃ¥rd as a Swede who knows the stories, though a children’s book is still needed to explain the extra bits.

Top Picks in Comics for 4/27/11

I have returned from Wizard World Anaheim and I am charged up!  It was an amazing event with all the love of comics reminiscent of the older conventions from the late 90’s.  If you haven’t seen it yet, check out our photo gallery full of cosplay goodness and keep your eyes on Comic Issues for upcoming interviews and articles about our time there.

But that’s not why you’re here, you’re here for some comic books and I’m the man to drop some knowledge on some of the books that came out last week.  It was another good week for comics, the Age of X came to it’s conclusion, Flash is catching up to the Flashpoint Event, and The Mighty Thor debuts his underwater action figure.

Wednesday is coming soon and that can only mean one thing, new comic day.  It’s the day that begins and ends my weeks with a little two day vacation in the middle.  You know me, I’m Anthony Silva, host of the Comic Issues Podcast and I’m bringing to you the Top Picks of all the books that came out last week… that I could afford.  Last week in my stack were a couple of books that I’ve been looking forward to since last month and many others did not disappoint in the slightest.  I took home books about magic, about mutants, and about heroes.  In the end though only one book can be my number one pick, and this week that book was…

A new Ultimate Spider-man?

Just this past Monday Marvel revealed a new costume for the incredibly popular Ultimate Spider-man, but what may be even more controversial is that it won’t be the loveable Peter Parker under the mask!  Coming out of the “Death of Spider-man” event that is being played out in both Ult. Spider-man and Ult. Comics Avengers Vs Ultimates, the Spidey world that we’ve known since 2000 is going to be turned upside down!

Wizard World on Tour!

If you’re a comic fan, and let’s admit it you are, then you love going to the cons.  There’s nothing like being in a room full of people with the same passion that you have.  This is what really makes the comic conventions so special; it’s not the movie premiers or the exclusive toys.  It’s the passion in everyone’s eyes when they’re in a room full of that thing they love… or maybe that’s just me.

Upcoming Release: Zenescope’s FLY

I know here at Comic Issues have we put a lot of focus on Marvel and DC Comics with some attention to Image and Dark Horse Comics. This is due dominantly to their longevity and marketing. We do however understand that these companies are a drop in the bucket compared to what is out there though. I am going to make it my personal mission to try and bring some of the gems from other companies to the readers here at Comic Issues.

Let us begin with an upcoming release from Zenescope Entertainment. In June 2011 they will present their series; FLY. FLY can be summed up in the following phrase, “What if there was a drug that gave you the power to fly? How far would you go to possess it?”
