Tell us a bit about yourself

I work as a professor at the Art Institute of Tampa – I also work as a freelance illustrator and cartoonist. I recently self-published my first book, “PC Weenies: Rebootus Maximus”, featuring characters from my long running webcomic, “The PC Weenies”. When I’m not teaching, I spend the balance of my time between freelance work and my family.

What’s been your inspiration for art?

My inspiration comes from television, cartoons, and comic books. I’m constantly trying to find new ways to push my work. Looking at what other artists are doing with the medium inspires me to push myself to the next level.

What supplies do you use for your art?

I work digitally these days. I use an Intuos4 tablet to create my art. I digitally ink using Corel Painter X, and I do everything else in Photoshop. However, I still maintain sketchbooks because nothing beats drawing with paper and pencil.

Any advice for beginners?

Draw. Draw. Draw. I know many new artists hear that a lot – but the cliché is true. The more you draw and the more you observe, the better you’ll be. Don’t be afraid to experiment. Style is something you’ll develop without realizing it, don’t worry about it at the onset.

A little bit of background story: just found out my wife is pregnant with our second kid (we were trying) and our two and a half year old son will soon need to be transitioned from the nursery to a big-boy room.  I wanted to make his big-boy room special for him, make it a fun place in which he looks forward to spending lots of time.  I started this process about 2 years ago, got about half-way through the process and then stalled for a year and a half or so.  Once I found out our second kid was on the way, I wanted to get the mural done as soon as possible so that our son could get used to spending more time in his new room and be comfortable in there when we finally moved him out of the nursery.

I just hope that kid doesn’t grow up to ask, “Dad, why are these graphics pixelated? Why didn’t you do any anti-aliasing?”

Artist of the Week is back with this week’s featured artist: Ethan Nicolle. I first started to hear about Ethan’s work while doing my frequent search on Deviant Art. There was some talk about this WebComic called Axe Cop. Tell us a bit about yourself?

I’m just a guy who has drawn comics most of his life.  I have always been into black and white indy comics more than mainstream, though I swear I am not hell bent on being punk rock, I just like my black and white comics.  I sort of worked my way up after doing a bunch of forgettable stuff and got a book called Chumble Spuzz with SLG Publishing which was nominated for an Eisner for Best Humor Publication in 2009.  I have a pilot optioned at Cartoon Network and most recently I am known as the guy who draws the web comic Axe Cop, which is written by my 5 year old brother.

What’s been your inspiration for art?

I guess I have just always had an innate love for using my imagination, though there is a discipline side to the actual skill of drawing that is largely faith-based. I know some of my content hasn’t been too holy, but my desire to do the best work I can comes from my belief that I was created with a purpose- and that purpose isn’t necessarily success in the arts, the purpose is to be the best version of myself I can be regardless of what happens… and I’m an artist, that’s what God made me.

What supplies do you use for your art?

For sketching I usually use Prismacolor Verithin colored pencils on a sketch book.  For most finished work or comic work I do it all totally digital using a Wacom tablet.  I do line drawing in Manga Studio and coloring in photoshop.

Any advice for beginners?

All the excuses you may have been able to hide behind while I was growing up have disappeared.  The internet provides easy access to great artists all over the world who are willing to critique your work, so if you can’t afford art school you still have that, and if you can’t get a publisher you can post a web comic online for free and reach a massive audience – if an audience responds well, you’ll get a publisher, or you can self publish.  The internet has really made the arts a free for all and artists have no excuses, so don’t hide behind them.  …And also don’t cross hatch too much.

Straight from a tweet form one of our readers, Mathew has posted screen shots of how the new Facebook is looking like.  Personally, I have never been a fan of Facebook’s current layout, but then again, I doubt I could do any better.  Past the break are the screenshots of the future of Facebook.  After viewing these, I think I’ll be happy with the design.  It’s very reminiscent of the iTunes/Mac OSX Finder layout.  Simple shortcuts or menus on the left, and everything else happens on the right with a simple search bar at the top.

Good job, Facebook. I look forward to your achievement of keeping productivity down in schools and businesses across the world by 25% or more.

Tell us a bit about yourself?

Hello, my name is Yaya Han and I am a cosplay idol and costume designer currently residing in Atlanta, GA. I have been making costumes and modeling for over 10 years now and am one of the only cosplayers in the world to turn this hobbyist activity into a career. I guess you can say that I’m a household name in the world of geekdom. I travel world-wide to teach workshops and panels on costume making, and to judge contests and host events, not to mention constantly working on new costume projects. I have a lot of fun playing dress up every week but also work hard and never have a day off lol.

What’s been your inspiration for art?

I have a fairly wide range of interest when it comes to costume design and crafting, and get inspiration from music, movies, traditional art, novels, history, photography… whatever has depth and a solid theme.

What supplies do you use for your art?

The sky is the limit! I’ve used everything from traditional fabrics to plastic, metal, foam, wood, fiberglass, feathers and fur. Truly, when it comes to costume design, the creative process is endless.

Any advice for beginners?

For beginner cosplayers, my biggest advice is to do a lot of research as many techniques are available in tutorial form online, and practice each technique a lot. Be it sewing, sculpting, jewelry making… keep working on each technique and take your time with the project. This is an expensive pass-time to be prepared to save up money for materials.
