So if you are a geek like me you may have heard of this site called Etsy.  So let me start the Etsy Thursday news post and showcase with what I would consider to be a cool purchase.  Today’s featured items from Etsy are the VinylWallDesigns. These designs are fun and easy to apply on your walls.  When your friends walk into your home or apartment, and you got one of these on your wall, you’ll gain instant geek cred.

We have all seen some really talented artists in various forms of media. It seems that there is a very large community over on Deviant Art. I find myself frequently visiting the site and just being blown away. I happen to stumble on Jeremy’s Art Gallery and boy was I amazed. A very interesting art style that really stands out. Also does some really bitchin Pokemon!!! Be sure to check out his Art Gallery. Here is a little Q&A session I had with Jeremy.

What’s been your inspiration for art?

As a child I was very inspired by Disney. Then came Don Bluth and he was like the ANTI-Disney. When i saw The Secret of Nihm I felt my whole life had changed… After which I saw the work of Norman Rockwell and art made a difference to me. Then came comics, and Jim Lee revolutionized the way I drew. Then Jae Lee blew my mind by proving comic art didn’t have to follow a specific “style”. Right now I am HUGELY inspired by greats like Matteo Scalera and Sean “Cheeks” Galloway. In fact I am taking Sean’s Schoolism course this semester and I can’t wait! As far as people close to me, I must give credit to my cousin Travis Story, who gave me the greatest tales to tell through my art. And my good friend Clayton Bodley, who gave me the best characters and a real drive to persue my art.

What supplies do you use for your art?

While my pieces look very digital in the end… I begin with pencil (usually non-photo blue) then detail in darker pencils. My lines are done on high quality tracing paper with ink. I then scan the lines, level them in Photoshop CS4, and color in the same program. Actually pretty simple if you think about it.

Any advice for a beginners?

It may sound cliche’ but DRAW DRAW DRAW… And when you wanna quit, KEEP DRAWING! Study art… In every genre. We can learn from every part of the field. Don’t be discouraged if you see art that you feel is better than your own. Learn from it. Give credit to those that help you on your journey. Have integrity. And most important HAVE FUN!

This week’s artist is Mike Henry. I was lucky enough to have stumbled onto his Art Gallery on Deviant Art and got in contact with him for a little Q&A.

What’s been your inspiration for art?

My inspiration has been many different things depending on where I am in my life. When I started drawing it was Ninja Turtles. When I was a teenager it was anime, Batman the Animated Series, ExoSquad, Gargoyles. Now it has expanded to just about anything I see from movies, animation, television to music, other artists, and daily life. It’s hard for me to see something that is cool and not get fired up about it. That makes me want to put something down on paper.

What supplies do you use for your art?

For drawing I used Blue and/or Carmine Red Col-erase pencils. I do final pencils with any number two pencil lying around or an HB. When I am sketching I use a black ballpoint pen. For a while I had these Batman ballpoint pens I really liked. But they were cheap and all eventually broke in one way or another. Now I am really liking the generic ones from Staples. Once I have my line work scanned I use an 6×8 Intuos 4 and Photoshop CS4 to do my color work.

Any advice for a beginners?

That’s always a hard one. Only because I feel that people are sick of the most obvious advice. That doesn’t stop me from saying it, though! Practice is the most important element of Art over and above all others. If you aren’t putting pencil to paper every day you are doing yourself a disservice. All your favorite artists got where they are because they didn’t stop working their ass off.

Oh, one other thing. Be open to as many different possibilities as you can. No competent art style is better than another. You have something to learn from everything. Follow you natural progression and don’t try to fight it. Just go with the flow and let everything around you be a part of what you are drawing.

This is just rediculious. Twitterer “withgandana” has posted a photo of a hired model playing video games while wearing a Street Fighter 4 branded Snuggie. I say “hired model” because what gamer would seriously buy that and let someone take a photo of them wearing it and let the photo be put on a package design. To Mr. Capcom or the marketing director that signed the paper to approve of this. Seriously? Really? Why? I would like you to answer those questions please and get back to me ASAP. Thank you.

FUGGY FUGGY!

This is one trippy art project.  Zoom Quilt is a collaborative group art project where each artist submits their art pieces into this long looping flash movie.  The flash movie continously zooms into each art piece making it seem like you’re going through a very weird world. Check it out.

First question that comes to mind after 5 seconds of watching it. How? How did the hell did they do that?

It’s super creative and worth a watch.
