The Gamer’s Diet. Step Two, Gamer Fuel

The Gamer’s Diet. Step Two, Gamer Fuel

This week we are keeping the FAT GEEK related posts going with Level Up. We talked last time about How you are eating, this week is more about WHAT you are eating. Your “Gamer Fuel”, not the Mountain Dew, but real actual food that is tasty and good for your body.

I will be very clear, I am a foodie. I freely admit that I am a food snob, I don’t like the idea of shoveling crap into your system. Not food that is bad for you per say, there is little redemption for eating a brownie that is wrapped in a cookie. I’ll admit, though I love them, it’s food that poorly made and bad for you.

I have little tolerance for bad food, I always remember eating as almost a sacred experience. In my house there is food around, good food. Grandma made food. Every time we Bieggers get together we play Golf, Eat, and Drink. It’s the bonding nature of food that brings us together to share in community.

That isn’t the case any more in our lives, the food that is good isn’t available to the nature of our schedules. We are constantly running around from place to place and when we get done with our day we sit down frag some jerks and go to bed. Eating isn’t sacred to gamers, eating is whatever is convient. I’m subject to this problem just like you guys are Wendy’s is a frequent stop, and not the grocery store. When I do go it frozen or premade, because I don’t have the time.

So, it isn’t a wonder why we have terrible diets we can’t break this cycle. Or can we?

Your Friday Fix 03/19/10: Ookami Kakushi

Your Friday Fix 03/19/10: Ookami Kakushi

Genres: Horror, Occult, Mystery

A remote town called Jouga is home to a pervasive myth about ancient, humongous wolves that once roamed the area. These wolves are still spoken of in local religious ceremonies and even revered as gods. A river divides the town between the old and new districts. It is to be noted that the people of the old district do not think kindly of those who have embraced the more modern culture. The story takes place as two siblings, Hiroshi Kuzumi and Mana Kuzumi, move to the town with their father, Masaaki Kuzumi, to seek inspiration for his occult novels.

Before Hiroshi can even settle in a neighbor girl, Isuzu Tsumuhana, latches on to him, confesses her love, and tells him that they will be together. Mana, who is in a wheelchair, dislikes the situation from the start. Mana does not seem to want to get along with anyone. When Issei Tsumuhana, Isuzu’s older brother, shows up Mana’s attitude changes. Issei also gets along well with their father, Masaaki, whose books he professes to enjoy. In fact, everyone at school and in town are so damn happy to see new people. Everyone wants to know more about Hiroshi, continually pestering him all throughout class.

One student, Ogasawara, tries to drag Hiroshi off to join his activity club, but is scolded by the class president Nemuru Kushinada. For the rest of the day Ogasawara seems jumpy and scared of everyone. Later that night we see Ogasawara running the streets of the town, his eyes glowing red. A group of masked figures stalk him in the shadows cast by a red moon. The leader, a young girl with a giant scythe, strikes him down. Elsewhere, a mysterious man reacts to the death he somehow feels.

The next day everyone seems to react like nothing happened. Nemuru says that Ogasawara “moved away” suddenly. Hiroshi and another newcomer to the town, Kaname Asagiri, discuss the strange disappearance. Both feel uneasy, especially when Nemuru requests a private audience with Isuzu. We see the two girls exchange heated, yet muted words. The only words we are left to hear are Isuzu saying that she will protect Hiroshi.

This series keeps a great deal of its cards hidden at the start of this series, yet shows just enough to get you to play the hand. The mystery of the town and the wolves, demons, and the warnings to keep off the streets at night set a great mood. While the horror aspect of the series is still mild, it is mounting.

Overall Hook Rating: B

Equality, or Lack Thereof

Equality, or Lack Thereof

Today’s article is genuinely on a very serious subject matter, so forgive me if I abandon my usual flippant tongue-in-cheek. In part. For a bit. If I can.

But seriously, this is no joke. This is Real Talk.

Xbox Live Bar Tag

As many of you may have heard, Xbox Live recently granted gamers the right to display a number of details about their personal details online, among them race, gender, and sexual orientation. And while in our culture we are moving in an ever-more accepting direction to different faiths and creeds, beliefs and ways of life, one of the most hostile environments for acceptance and change is in the quite faceless and odds-evening ether of the internet.

Gamers are, by and large, classified as nerds, geeks, dweebs, and generally socially unacceptable social outcasts. And while we’re growing to be more and more socially acceptable almost by the day, as evidenced by the popularity of titles like COD:MW2 and the Halo franchise, Madden and Tiger, we are still a subset of humanity that is commonly made fun of, mocked, and not allowed to sit at the cool table in the lunchroom.

Top Five Reasons Your School Needs Humans VS Zombies

Top Five Reasons Your School Needs Humans VS Zombies

Humans Vs Zombies has officially begun here at the University of North Carolina at Greensboro and mayhem has overtaken the student body. If you have never heard of HVZ it is a lovely little game created at Groucher College in 2005 witch involves a game of moderated tag between humans and the devil spawn, Zombies . The players wear bandannas on either their arms or legs, indicating human, or their heads, indicating Zombie. On day one a single (sometimes multiple depending on group size) human is selected to be the original Zombie. The aforementioned O.Z. does not have to designate themselves as a Zombie and tries to tag as many people on the first day as they can. From the next day on players must always wear their designated headbands. Humans can stun Zombies by shooting them with a Nerf gun or hitting them with a sock ball. Zombies who don’t feed will eventually starve out. The players then compete in missions against the other faction, as well as humans being petrified about stepping outdoors for fear of a Zombie attack. In short, it’s awesome. So here are my top five reasons you should bring HVZ to your campus.

5) Teamwork

Three guys and a Mohawk Elf

HVZ is the perfect way to brush up on your teamwork. When plotting against a Zombie horde, only the strongest and smartest of teams will survive. This means planning, meetings, secret codes, secret hand signals, secret boxers, etc…. Everyone who has played Left 4 Dead knows that teamwork is essential. No one can be that idiot who rushes ahead and leaves the rest of the team in the dust. Because that idiot is going to be a Zombie, and that’s no good.

I’m a Fat Geek – Week 2 – It hurts, but it feels so good

I’m a Fat Geek – Week 2 – It hurts, but it feels so good

Any progress? yet?

I’m tired. I’m sore. But just like the headline says, “it hurts, but it feels so good.”

I’m six exercising days into the EA Active 30-day challenge. Yes, six.  No, I’m not slacking. See, during the challenge, you exercise for two days, then rest for one. For each exercise day, you are given different number of exercises.  This is really good because you never do the same thing twice in a row.  You’re always guessing what is next.  Also, each day’s exercises are always harder than the last and I’m simultaneously loving and hating it. Especially during the exercises that burn my thighs. ugh.

The Gamer’s Diet. Step One, Moderation.

The Gamer’s Diet. Step One, Moderation.

In the spirit of helping Nelson I am going to dedicate as series of posts to diets and health, sounds about as much fun as ripping your fingernails off? What if I said that you didn’t have to live on a handful of Wheat Thins and Water and you could eat your Baconator? Sound better? Good.

So maybe you are a Fat Geek, that is okay. But you might be reading thinking I really don’t want to be for all my life though. We are here to help you.

Now, you need to know a few thing before you get started as stated in The Hacker’s Diet -which is free to read, but kinda dry in my opinion- says the more calories that you put into your body the equal to more energy you have to expend to stay balanced or lose weight. Simple right? You put X amount of Stuff in your body you need to use it, or else your body will store the excess for energy later. Your body just get calories and thinks sweet I have to use X amount of energy today, but I only need 3/4s of this energy here (because we all know a Calorie is a unit of energy, right?) I’ll just store this for later, maybe tomorrow we won’t have such a good haul and will have to go without.
