Review: Kong: Skull Island

Moviegoers first encounter Skull Island in 1933: A mystical island lost in time where monsters and dinosaurs still roamed free. That’s where a small group of humans found Kong: A giant ape that has delighted audiences for more than 70 years.

And the love people have for him still grows. Since the 30s, Kong has had several movie sequels, remakes, cartoons, comics and toys. Kong has become a pop culture phenomenon with epic proportions. So it’s no wonder that there would always be more Kong movies. This new incarnation: Kong: Skull Island, directed by Jordan Vogt-Roberts, brings Kong back to theaters and reminds us all why he is king.

Review: Logan

James Mangold’s Logan is the definitive Wolverine movie. Subdued, mature, contemplative and brutal, Logan arguably could be called the best X-Men movie, period. It’s Hugh Jackman’s tenth on screen portrayal of Wolverine, three in his own personal films. This marks the end of an era; we watch Jackman and Patrick Stewart bow out, as their time as X-Men comes to close. What could have been another throw away comic book movie ends up having more in common with a John Wayne western than a mutant laced action flick. This is by far one of the best comic book movies to date and will go down in history as such.

Review: Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them

We thought we said good-bye to Harry Potter in 2011 with the final film installment, Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows Part 2. We cried, we laughed and we let go as an entire generation made peace with the end of the adventures of the world famous boy wizard. A few years back rumor and rumblings begin surfacing that author J.K. Rowling was thinking of getting back into the Potter game. Rumor became fact, and fact became the new Harry Potter spin-off series/prequel: Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them. And with great rejoicing we are welcomed back into the world of Harry Potter once again.

Review: Doctor Strange

We have seen gods, monsters, robots, superheroes, “mutants” and even a radioactive human-spider. Marvel Studios has shown us everything that makes a good comic book movie, except for one thing: magic. With Marvel Studio’s 14th film the world now meets the universe of magic with The Sorcerer Supreme himself, Doctor Strange.

Review: Suicide Squad

In a new approach to their cinematic universe, The WB and DC Comics turned away from their mainstream heroes and let the villains come out and play in a movie based on the popular comic of the same name: Suicide Squad. Trying so hard to just not be Marvel, the studio once again went in a totally different direction. This is coming after the universally disliked Batman v Superman, which of course came after the lackluster Man of Steel. Is the third time the charm?

No. No it isn’t.

What could have been an amazing film ends up being exactly what you now expect from a WB/DC movie: a chaotic mess.

The South Park Experience at SDCC

The San Diego Comic-Con is great at bringing things to the public they have never seen before, or giving them the chance to experience something near and dear to them. This year was no exception, particularly thanks to South Park and Comedy Central. Once again South Park was right in the middle of Comic-Con and the heart of San Diego’s Historic Gaslamp district. There attendees could wait in line and have an experience made just for South Park fans.

Review: The Purge: Election Year

Review: The Purge: Election Year

With the current political climate of Democrats and Republicans at each other’s throats and mass-shootings happening so often people barely seem shocked anymore, it should come as no surprise that a third Purge movie comes during an election year. Especially this election year, which feels like a precursor to an actual Purge. So give it up for the “life imitates art, art imitates life” scenario with The Purge: Election Year.
